Cell phones and internet access have become ubiquitous in the modern world are are both now essentials for full participation in society. However we continue to leave access to these essential services in the hands of a small #oligarchy of companies who overcharge and in general rip Canadians off. These #oligarchs maintain their dominance by controlling the limited spectrum via government auctions which make the cost of entering the market (on top of the infrastructure costs of building a network) nonviable for new entrants; this in turn drives up the costs for Canadians.

#Canada needs to stop leasing out its spectrum space (both new spectrum auctions and existing lease renewals) and instead build a publicly owned national wireless network from which anyone can lease bandwidth at actual cost. This would allow an unlimited number of providers as the only prerequisite would be to have the technical skills to setup an access instance and that in turn would drive down costs.

@robho@mastodon.social @leftylabourtech@mstdn.social The power of the oligopolies in Canada is rooted in their vertical integration. Under 'normal' conditions the owners use that integration to maximise their profit margins while pretending that the final level (the one that sells to the consumer) is barely profitable as a form of propaganda However when a any sort of challenge to their power arises they then use that same vertical integration to make it uneconomical (under the capitalist system) for that challenge to succeed, and then once the challenge is defeated they resume ripping off the population Thus either a publicly owned, equally fully vertically integrated, 'anchor' is needed to break their power (since they would no longer be able to exploit their own vertical integrations when one exists with the even greater financial power of the government) OR we need to end the capitalist economic system. While I would prefer the later realistically the former is more achievable in the short term and thus should be pursued

@miki_lou@mastodon.social Conservative philosophy requires the population to be obedient to authority and the indoctrination process one is subject to when they join the military is focused on making young minds obedient to authority. Thus increased militarism, and conscription in particular, are the perfect means of creating the obedient population those in power desire.
