Cell phones and internet access have become ubiquitous in the modern world are are both now essentials for full participation in society. However we continue to leave access to these essential services in the hands of a small #oligarchy of companies who overcharge and in general rip Canadians off. These #oligarchs maintain their dominance by controlling the limited spectrum via government auctions which make the cost of entering the market (on top of the infrastructure costs of building a network) nonviable for new entrants; this in turn drives up the costs for Canadians.
#Canada needs to stop leasing out its spectrum space (both new spectrum auctions and existing lease renewals) and instead build a publicly owned national wireless network from which anyone can lease bandwidth at actual cost. This would allow an unlimited number of providers as the only prerequisite would be to have the technical skills to setup an access instance and that in turn would drive down costs.
