Man. I feel so worn out tonight. My muscle fatigue symptoms are a bitch today. So just resting. I hope everyone is having a good evening or a good day, wherever you may be.

With vehement disagreements between the Northern and Southern United States set of core values, is anyone really surprised by this?

When some people read Rosie's writing on social media, they were left with the impression that I like to use social media as a public call-out space. For the record, when I publicly reflect on the experience someone gave me or I gave them, the intent is not to pass judgment on anyone as a person. It is instead an opportunity to reflect on how both parties came across to each other during moments where context was missing and people needed clarification that they didn't get at the time of the specific event. I can think that someone is an amazing person, but as a journalist, I consider it my duty to report the facts as both parties would have perceived them at the time the event occurred. If my perceptions are wrong, I'm open to private conversations, and I am even happy to post a clarifying addendum if someone politely requests that I do so later. What I have no control over is how people talk about me when I'm not in the room. Likewise, if I'm having a discussion about an experience someone gave me and someone else isn't present, they have no control over how I am discussing them in that space. But any discussions that I have regarding the experience that I received are done in good faith. I may have my own personal opinions about a given event, like anyone else, but I do my best not to let those influence how I tell a story in writing. This is why my 6-month social media rule now exists. (1/2)

Over the years, people have asked how my distributed ethnographic case study actually works. Because the project involves collaborators across multiple countries and both online and in-person environments, I’ve written a short participation guide.

What follows is an abridged explanation of the structure. A full operational manual also exists for readers who want more detail.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

This project is a distributed ethnographic study examining social dynamics, consent practices, digital culture, and the ways communities interact across online and offline spaces.

Participation may occur through conversation, observation, collaboration, or simply by being present in social environments where the project takes place.

Participation is voluntary.

IDENTITY CONTEXT SIGNALS

Some readers notice that I occasionally use different names in different contexts.

These are context signals, not different individuals. They indicate which analytical framework is active at a given moment.

Emily refers to the real-life version of me known by people who grew up with me.

Leah represents the Christian-conservative framework used in some analyses.

Leora represents the queer polyfeminist framework used in others.

Megan usually means I’m attending an event or meetup in a research or professional capacity.

Rosalin signals the technology layer of the project, often appearing as Cassie or Annalise when discussions revolve around technology ecosystems and tools.

I noticed something interesting: the more I have begun clearing up ambiguity and embodying transparency across social media channels. Men who used to vibe with me have drifted away, but in their place, I gained rapport with women in their life. It's so fascinating to watch unfold.

Installment 3: Thought Control — How Groups Shape What Feels Safe to Think

When people hear the phrase thought control, they often imagine something extreme or dramatic. In reality, it usually develops in much quieter ways.

Most groups—religious communities, activist circles, professional networks, hobby communities, or friend groups—operate around three basic anchors:

• a mission (why the group exists)
• a vision (what the group hopes to accomplish)
• a set of core beliefs (assumptions members share about how the world works)

These anchors help communities function. Without them, groups drift and struggle to coordinate their efforts.

But they also create something else: a shared narrative about reality.

Over time, members begin interpreting events through that narrative. People repeat the group’s language, adopt its interpretations, and gradually filter information through the same framework. In many cases, this happens without anyone consciously intending to enforce a particular way of thinking.

Humans are social creatures. Belonging to a group often feels safer than standing apart from it, so people naturally adapt their thinking to maintain connection with others.

Of course, every community needs some shared norms in order to function. The question is not whether a group has expectations, but whether curiosity and thoughtful disagreement can exist within them. (1/6)

I had the weirdest dream this morning. I went to an Apple store in Long Beach, California. I got suited up, as in put on my shirt, my walkie-talkie, and my work iPhone holster. But then I couldn't remember the passcode to the iPhone, and that was when I suddenly remembered that I didn't work for Apple anymore.

• flag red flags • show pros/cons You don’t have to open 20 tabs. ⸻ 4) Site-specific digging You can say: Look at the policy page for X site and tell me what it says about refunds. I can go directly there and pull the relevant sections. ⸻ What I cannot do (important limits) I want you to have a realistic mental model, not hype. I cannot: • continuously monitor websites in the background • log into accounts for you • browse freely like a human clicking around endlessly • autonomously explore without a goal I need a prompt or task to initiate a search. Think of me as: a researcher you give assignments to not a bot that wanders the internet on its own ⸻ When I’m most useful as your web proxy You’ll get the biggest payoff when you ask me things like: • “Check if this claim is true.” • “Summarize what experts say about…” • “Find recent updates on…” • “Compare these options…” • “Is this safe/legit?” Those are situations where I genuinely outperform manual browsing. ⸻ When manual browsing is better You should browse yourself if: • you’re casually scrolling for inspiration • you want visual discovery (Pinterest-style exploration) • you’re browsing social feeds I can’t replicate exploratory scrolling. ⸻ Practical tip for using me efficiently If API usage or time matters, the most efficient format is: Search for: [exact question] Focus on: [what matters] Ignore: [what doesn’t] That lets me return laser-focused results fast. ⸻ (2/3)

I've been using ChatGPT for about a year now. I use the paid version, so its responses are personalized to my queries. Here is the prompt I just fed GPT as well as its response. I asked, given the capabilities you have today, what can you do to browse the web on my behalf? Here’s the honest, current breakdown of what I can and cannot do when it comes to browsing the web for you, so you can decide when I’m useful as a research agent and when I’m not. ⸻ What I can do for you (today) 1) Live web lookups — when needed I can access the live web on demand to: • verify current info • check recent news • confirm up-to-date policies • compare products/services • pull info from specific sites you name I only do this when: • the info might be outdated • accuracy matters • you ask for something time-sensitive • or you explicitly ask me to search 👉 Example: If you say “Check whether Discord is requiring age verification now,” I’ll run a live search and cite sources. ⸻ 2) Targeted research agent mode I’m strongest when you give: • a question • a topic • or a decision you’re weighing Then I can: • gather sources • synthesize them • explain differences • evaluate credibility • summarize findings This is much faster than you browsing manually, especially with screen reader navigation. ⸻ 3) Structured comparisons If you ask something like: Compare three voice-writing certification programs I can: • find official info • compare features… (1/3)

@Fragglemuppet@fandom.ink @mcourcel@allovertheplace.ca @gtbray@allovertheplace.ca No, that's the kind of thing I would do if I were asked to join in. That said, my cousins and I were too busy making music together. My cousins either sang or played instruments.

@mcourcel@allovertheplace.ca Dill pickle peanuts? How is that even remotely appetizing? I mean, I'll try any snack food once, but it's hard to imagine that being appetizing. That said, apparently I am odd for not liking dill pickles. I have been told this numerous times by multiple people lol.

@mcourcel@allovertheplace.ca @bmoore123@tweesecake.social So let me get this straight. The standard version won't let you fill out forms, but the portable version will? I mean, I'm not gonna shoot a gift horse in the mouth, but, that sounds weird.
