I expect that I might get a teensy amount of pushback from a claim I made on this one. I say that hermeticism is panentheistic, while platonism isn't. Someone might point out that NEOplatonism is panentheistic, since Plotinus taught that reality emanates from the monad - I concede that he really taught that! But Platonism proper, the stuff Socrates and Plato actually *taught* makes no such claims. The problem is, Plotinus didn't teach Platonism per se. Plotinus mixed a whole LOT of influences in with platonism to make his mathematical turbo-philosophy religion; calling neoplatonism "platonism" proper is like saying a martini is the same thing as a shot of gin.

This is important on account of the claim those freaks made concerning "enochian" magic, john dee, and their version of "hermeticism." John dee, whatever it was he actually believed, didn't base any of his wicked magical system on the predicate of panentheism: in fact, his mythmaking concerning an "enochian" language wouldn't make any sense, since summoning demons would be an ontological process rather than a verbal one if that were the case. His actual writings suggest more of a classic platonic theory of forms, and even that is just vague gobbledygook he used to kersnipper more gold from the English treasury.

But much of esotericism relies on you not knowing that they're taking these mutually exclusive philosophies - like hermeticism and platonism - and mixing them up without addressing the tension in their exclusive truth claims. The fools that bow down to "trismegistus" and his teachings like to think that everything is connected via divine presence in all things; the dorks listening to Plato think that matter is separate from transcendentals and ideas, but take their properties from those objects. These can't both be true, but that doesn't stop the occultist from employing both systems and it doesn't stop demons from entertaining their dumb little rituals.

SUNDAY RESOURCES NOW UP!

During Lent, each homily is about the Psalms. Let's chat about another Song of Ascent, one that holds great value when meditating on how the promises in it played out:

26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
-Matthew 6:26-30

Christ has told us to not be anxious over anything. He means *sinful* anxiety of course, the temptations that arise from a sense of fear and desperation. As He continues, He shows us that our anxieties are understandable - but irrational.

The birds we see flying around do not fret... but they still need to eat. They look to God for their food, and work with Him as they find and distribute the things they eat. Jesus uses birds as His example because He says that God feeds them, yet they still do stuff. Instead of being anxious, we are to rely on God as the birds do. But like the birds, we do not sit around waiting for the Lord to put food in our mouths - He expects us to go out and get what He has provided, expecting good from Him the entire time.

He also asks whether anxiety actually *does* anything for us. Does it make us live longer? No, it actually shortens our lifespan. Does worrying solve problems? No - though it may inspire action to address a problem, worrying is not a rational thing so the actions taken will be ineffective, distracting, or downright sinful. Worrying won't solve the problems.

Christ also mentions clothing, and speaks of clothes as regarding their appearance. Before the textile revolutions that we benefit from today, clothing was more difficult to obtain, more expensive, and a stronger status symbol than today. Sure, someone might notice a woman's Gucci purse or a man's Armani blazer, but "looking nice" is easier for everyone these days even if they don't spend thousands on a sweater. Everyone can afford a decent polo shirt at least. But in the ancient times clothing was a gate to social status; if you weren't able to afford dyed robes or jewelry, life was certain to not be easy and you probably weren't going to have a lot of friends.

When Jesus brings up clothing, it is not *merely* clothing that He is discussing but rather what was needed to get clothing and everything that clothing brought people. It requires money and time, and nice clothes bring friends and opportunities and even someone to woo and wed. It could also, if we're speaking of sturdy stuff like armor, mean protection. With this one example, Christ speaks of everything else that goes into life aside from our daily bread.

Why do lillies serve as His example of clothing? Because their beauty and safety takes absolutely no effort on their part. God expects us to see matters of food as cooperation: He provides, we collect. When it comes to the things we *can't* control, we ought to be like the plants of the field and simply entrust ourselves to Him. I cannot control whether someone breaks into my home at night, but I absolutely can trust God to protect me and my family - and for Him to wake me up for responding to the threat.

Note here that Jesus does not condemn the people he speaks to. He is no gnostic, buddhist nor monk. He goes against anxiety, not seeking to deal with hunger. He goes against worry, not addressing human needs. He does not tell the crowd that they are sinful on account of *wanting* food and water and nice clothes, because it is not bad to want such things. Where sin enters the picture is when the soul lacks faith in a loving God who wants to provide them!

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
-Matthew 6:25

Christ has told us that you cannot serve God and money. This is to say, you must choose whether you will put God first in all things and make Him your chief priority...or you will choose something else in His stead, something that will not save.
Now He discusses a chief source of sin, the sin of anxiety.

This is not to say that all worrying is sinful. If you are driving in the middle of a terrible storm, then it is good to drive slowly so that you do not get into an accident. That sort of "worry" is mere caution, a recognition of risks. The book of Proverbs is all about living a cautious and forward thinking life: save money, don't take reckless oaths, don't put yourself in unnecessary danger, etc.

The sinful sort of anxiety which Christ condemns here is not mere caution. It is sin in our hearts telling us that everything is doomed because we don't have what we want, a temptation that rises within using desperation as a mask. Sinful anxiety tells a man that his money problems need to be solved *right now* and he maybe ought to rob someone to do it. Sinful anxiety tells a woman that if she does not sleep with that man she just met then she will be lonely forever. Sinful anxiety tells children to disobey their parents because an early bedtime or a time limit on gaming means they'll never have fun again.

Christ speaks much concerning anxiety, so we must take a few days to meditate on it and come back to this topic frequently. The first thing we must realize is that Jesus is showing us compassion with this teaching. Someone who is plagued with panicky thoughts might consider it cruelty - "I can't help it! Why shouldn't I be anxious about these bills/my kid's school/societal problems?" But worry worts like this need His words the most!

He says that life is more than food or clothing my friend. Our anxieties are not just part of our sinful nature rising up to tempt us: that sinfulness also seeks to prevent us from living the good life. Someone beset by this sort of worrying will be half alive at best, spending most of their time trying to medicate, sin, and distract away the feelings they suffer from. Christ, who arrived that we may have life, condemns this sin out of compassion. As He speaks to us further about it, His words are the medicine we need to live life more fully and joyfully.

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
-Matthew 6:24

When I was in boot camp, there were a lot of times where the RDCs (recruit division commanders, Navy drill instructors) would mess with our heads. They would give us contradictory orders in order to make sure we had the force of will to make tough decisions and not crack under stress.

You could be standing watch, and one of them would threaten that your life was at risk if you did not greet whatever Petty Officer or Chief walked through the door to the compartment you were standing by. Then, another RDC could tell you that the inspector is coming and you had better shut your mouth when he arrives or there will be dire punishment for you. Both RDCs had equal rank and had equal authority over you. Simultaneously you had contradictory orders that were both lawful.

If you spoke the greeting to the inspector, you got in trouble; if you stayed silent, you got in trouble.
But here is the hard part: you cannot pick a *neither* option. You had to obey one of them, and accept that obedience to one constituted disobedience to the other. You would get in trouble and do pushups till you puked either way.

So it is with Christ's saying here. Though God is infinitely higher than anything else, from the ground level we must make a choice as to who our master is. If you follow God, He will have you do and say and believe things that enrage the world and violate the world's morality; yet you will be alive to Him, receiving blessings here and eternal life in the age to come. If you follow some worldly thing instead of God, then the world will demand you sin and blaspheme and hold to false beliefs, but it will "reward" you with some temporary earthly perks.

You cannot choose to do both. To follow one means to be punished by the other. Follow God, and the world will persecute you. Follow the world, and God will sentence you to eternal damnation. If you *try* to be both, Christ says here that naturally you will end up serving only one. The wise man chooses to follow our Lord.

Christ says you cannot serve God and money. Do not misunderstand - He says "money" as an example of the different worldly things people worship. You cannot be a "money-first Christian" the same way you cannot be a "race-first Christian" or an "ideology-first Christian" or a "sex-first" Christian. This occurs for sinful lifestyles quite frequently too. It is for this reason that the "celibate homosexual Christians" are more often damned than not, because their homosexual advocacy is clearly an attempt to serve two masters - and when it comes to it, they love their gayness too much to repent of it.

Of course, many things people focus on are not sins in and of themselves. Having money isn't a sin, and neither is advocating for your race's well being or wanting to get married. Jesus will go on to say that our Father knows what you need and you can entrust these matters to Him. But God must be first, foremost, and preeminent in your life before they are even considered. Anything else is idolatry.

9 Pray then like this:
“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
10 Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread,
12 and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
-Matthew 6:9-15

I cannot comment on the Lord's Prayer in any way that would add to what Dr. Luther says about it in the Catechism. I recommend checking that out here, it takes only a short time:
https://bookofconcord.org/small-catechism/the-lords-pr...

But I will add this, that if you want any of your prayers to be heard then you must forgive. If you do not forgive, then do not think to yourself that you hallow God's Name. If you do not forgive, do not expect God's Kingdom to be with you, nor that His Will is going to be done in your life - not in a pleasant way, at any rate. If you refuse to be a forgiving person, shudder in fear because you have no right to expect your daily bread from God. And since the unforgiving man has already led himself into every temptation and evil, he ought not hope for God to deliver him from them.

When Christ says, "if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses," He means it. But if someone is unforgiven then they do not belong to God, so any prayer they make at all will fall on deaf ears. It angers our Heavenly Father greatly that someone would dare to receive the Blood of His only Son only to deny pardon and mercy to others. It is a hypocrisy of the lowest kind and a stench in His nostrils.

Whatever forgiveness you have withheld, do so no longer. Do not look for some talmudic excuse to withhold it - "they did not apologize!" or "it isn't my place to forgive!" or "this sin is unforgivable by definition!" No. Don't play games with God and don't gamble your salvation on staying mad at an offense that won't matter a million years from now. He did not say that you should forgive everyone except that one person that you really don't want to. If you would call yourself a Christian, then forgive them all and do not discriminate in your pardon.

So your dad left when you were a kid. So your teacher gave you a bad grade. So a bully beat you up. So you got canceled. So your politician made gas prices higher. Insofar as these affect you, forgive and then pray for their repentance so that God will forgive them. No, forgiving doesn't mean forgetting, and no it doesn't mean being best friends with them. But none of what they did will matter in 400,000 years of being in Paradise; why risk losing that on account of your vapor like anger during this earthly sojourn? Let go of any right of vengeance you have, let go of their debt, let God handle it and you will find great joy on the other side.

Charlie Bronson defies everything the "looksmaxxing" crowd believes about gender relations. He looks like Wario, rarely bathes, is covered in unsightly body hair, has no money and is also in prison for life. In spite of this he's managed to woo a woman to marriage three separate times and has a kid. Meanwhile the guy who's doing TRT at 16 and wearing makeup to cover the bruises from "bone smashing" complains that girls still don't want him. Seems to me that God has given men unique equipment for attracting women, and it doesn't consist of having the ideal appearance (as determined by gays and shut-ins).

31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
-Matthew 5:31-32

Marriage is supposed to be for life, and 99% of the time there is no excuse for breaking that marriage asunder. The reasons for Christ's words are found in Malachi 2:14-15, where the prophet makes it clear that the three defining features of marriage are Covenant, Union and Spirit:
"[...] she is your companion and your wife by covenant. Did he not make them one, with a portion of the Spirit in their union?"

A man has a Covenant with a woman, the legal agreement by which the two of them acquiesce to be wed. Above all, this agreement stipulates absolute loyalty. Now, if she has not committed adultery, then she has not violated that agreement in a way that would break it: Moses may have permitted divorce, but not for frivolous reasons. A wife being a nag or not keeping the home well isn't declaring disloyalty to her husband. But a divorced woman *can't* be loyal to her husband, for he has cast her aside!

When a man divorces his wife, they are STILL one flesh for life. If she must remarry to survive, then the act of remarriage pollutes the union between her and her former husband. The new husband is now united to a woman who is already united to another man. What else can this be called except adulteration?

And of course the Holy Spirit is involved as well, as the prophet says. He brought the couple together, and He is actively involved in their lives. For a man to divorce his wife for any reason OTHER than her grossly departing from him sexually is to resist the Holy Spirit's active will for them to remain together.

Christ's point is that you ought not get divorced - full stop. Unless one spouse has cheated on the other by engaging in coitus with another person, you have no grounds for divorce - and shouldn't want it anyway. In Mark 10:10-12, these rules are applied to both sexes.

In context, Christ gives us this teaching *right after* telling us to not covet another woman in our hearts. This is very important to notice! There must have been someone the crowd, hearing Christ speak about coveting women and committing adultery with our hearts, trying to weasel his way past Jesus's words. "Ah," he told himself, "I'll just quietly divorce my wife, and then I'll be free to pursue any woman I want!" Our Savior does not let such a man get away with it. He makes sure that we understand it clearly enough: once you are married, you are with that spouse for better or worse. Unless they have sex with someone else, you should never think of it as needing to be "free" from them - for the marriage was a gift from God, and we must not spit on what He has given.

Let us finish up our examination of the Beatitudes by looking at them from another angle.

2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
-Matthew 5:2-10

Who is the poorest in spirit? Well, one who went from being in Throne room of Heaven to being born in a manger. That would be quite the impoverishment and humility.

Who mourns the most? One who mourns over the sins of man to the point of dying on man's behalf.

Who is the most meek? We have defined meek as humble, gentle, and self-controlled. One who is God, but does not avail Himself of the easy solutions presented by omnipotence, is certainly the most meek. Especially if He does not run around demanding the universe bow down and worship.

Who hungers and thirsts the most for righteousness? It is plain to see that is someone who is born, lives and dies so that countless men may be made righteous, then that one is the most hungry for it.

Who is the most merciful? Ah, one who wins mercy for all men, paying the debt for all their sins.

Who is the most pure in heart? One who never sins - and never even thinks to do so.

Who is the greatest peacemaker? One who wins eternal peace between God and men.

Who is the most persecuted for righteousness' sake? One who becomes the most hated figure in history for the sake of righteousness.

My friends, it is plain to see that for every one of these Beatitudes, Christ is the chief subject and greatest example. To follow them in our own human capacity is to be *like* our Savior. To be made like Jesus then is the height of blessedness for all believers. This is the main point of the opening to the Sermon on the Mount.

9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
-Matthew 5:9-12

Imagine hearing this for the first time. Jesus just told you that peacemakers are blessed. Then He tells you that if you get persecuted and attacked because of Him then you are blessed as well. How do we square that circle? After all, persecution implies conflict, a disrupted peace that a peacemaker would naturally find distasteful.

The answer is this: conflict is going to happen no matter what you do. But the one who suffers conflict on account of the Prince of Peace, proclaiming the Gospel which brings peace, is particularly blessed. Humanity will suffer, but the Christian suffers for something good and is rewarded: the nonbeliever suffers and then suffers worse in the fires of hell.

The core distinction between the suffering of a Christian and the suffering of a non-Christian is this, that what the Christian goes through is *worth it.* Yes, he will be persecuted for his faith in Jesus (all believers are - 2 Timothy 3:12), but his spiritual poverty has led to receiving salvation by God's Grace, and so he receives the promise of great reward.

Nonbelievers still suffer. They still get diseases, they still get injured, and their relationships are fraught with peril too. For that matter, they are sometimes persecuted for their beliefs and lifestyles as well. But they live their lives with relative ease and distractions until Judgment comes (Psalm 73 - no seriously, take a break to read Psalm 73 today). The devil is happy to let the nonbeliever float around, sometimes prospering, sometimes even drugged up and oblivious to their own pain, so long as they end up damned.

But you are different my friend. Our Lord has offered you eternal life, and He has offered to make this earthly sojourn worth it. All that is required is to trust in Him - even when it costs you.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
-Matthew 5:9

If you are not part of God's family, then by no means will you be saved. This is to say, you must be *adopted* into His family. This does not happen by our own efforts, but by our spiritual poverty - that is, to receive our membership in the Kingdom of Heaven by grace alone.

But how shall we know that a man is part of God's family? Hearing someone pay lip service to doctrinal platitudes is not sufficient. Anyone, even the devil himself, can tell make sounds with their mouths that sound Christian. But for someone to be *called* a son of God, for the inner man to be recognized by the outer self, requires them to be a peacemaker.

Let us not be mistaken. Just because someone is cantankerous or crabby does not mean that he or she is damned. God calls you a son of God if you belong to Him by virtue of justifying faith, not some measure of sufficient peacefulness. But there is a point wherein love of conflict can become disloyalty to God, and we must be careful on that front. The man who thinks that every problem is solved by fighting and death risks his soul, if it becomes clear that what he *really* worships is strife.

Nonetheless, the chief meaning to Christ's words here is that other people will recognize the peacemaker to be a son of God. Why is this the case? Because Jesus is the chief Peacemaker, and He is *The* Son of God. We worship Jesus because He made peace between God and men by submitting to Crucifixion. We recognize Christians by their willingness to maintain and establish peace if they can help it.

It is worth noting that the world has always proclaimed the opposite. Pharaohs were called sons of their false gods as they waged war and took other people's captive. Caesar was declared a deity by the Romans by virtue of his conquests. The Aztecs worshipped their kings who bathed their lands in blood. Ancient Germanic pagans believed in "Valhalla," an eternal battlefield for their greatest warriors. Even when worldly men proclaim themselves pacifists, they excuse their favorite murderers.

I'll have none of the nonsense objections we hear from Christians who bear a childish desire for violence. I can already hear their arguments - "God is a warrior!" "Jesus said He came to bring a sword!" "What about the Old Testament!?!!"
All well and good, yes. But Christ says they will know you to be a son of God if you are a peacemaker, and so the Apostolic command is "If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all" (Romans 12:18). Do not covet the fight. You can prepare all you want for inevitable conflicts, but do not start them and seek to prevent them. When they happen (and they will), try to end them amicably if you can. That is what it means to be a peacemaker.

We don't need more widows and orphans. We don't need more rape victims or refugees. We don't need more ruined friendships or divorces. Blessed are the peacemakers.

The latest Sex&Marriage is now up! In the last installment, we talked about the part of God's curse on Eve which said "your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you." That "for" can also mean "against" or "toward." From that moment on, women are beset with an unavoidable draw concerning men in general and their husbands in particular. But living according to that preposition is...well, tricky. Let's talk about the minefield of modernity that women are in, and how best to navigate through that without trying to please people that don't care about them. @Whitewall_Blasphemy Probably because spencer represents an entirely secular version of WN that doesn't actually put any moral requirements on its adherents. They can be degenerate and evil so long as they're all smug and present as superior to everyone else.

I hope richard spencer's disease ridden butt itches with an unscratchable itch for the rest of his life on account of this retarded take. Baal sucks, Jezebel sucks, and idol worshipers can go pound sand. *Spencer watching baal worshipers copy Biblical passages for their mythology, sacrifice kids to various gods, share temple hookers and kill Old Testament prophets:* "Wow this is, eh heh, like the planet Jupiter, very, uh, heh, hail and apollo, heh." The absolute absurdity

So I was driving to a medical appointment for my wife (routine stuff, she's perfectly fine). While we were driving, an Allstate guy with his car covered in Allstate insurance stickers was just ahead of us. Wouldn't you know it, the guy brake checks us. Nobody in front of him, he suddenly stops, and thankfully I hit the brake pedal just in time. After he did this, he immediately pulled a U-turn and started going up and down the road again. I can't help but wonder if this was the most aggressive form of advertising available. "Hey there partner, looks like you *hyuk 😄 hyuk 🤣* rear ended me. You got insurance? Because if not, I got an *snicker 😏* Allstate policy I can get you plugged into." I think that when God delivers us from disasters like car crashes, it often isn't just preventing something bad from happening to us, but also frustrating the evil plans of men who could stand to benefit from such disasters.

I'm willing to bet money that, like, at least one dude divorced his wife because the guy saying this was a jew. "Honey, I'm leaving you." "Wh-wh-what??? But we have a great marriage what could possibly be wrong???" "A jew told me that marriage is good and completes us. Jews always lie. Marriage is clearly a jewish psyop. Heil Hitler."

@Thickasabrick @Godcast There are three major camps in Lutheranism right now. -liberal "Lutheranism" (doesn't hold to any historic doctrine, they just took over the churches). -"Confessional Lutheranism" (tries to hold on to historic doctrine, but often bends to the will of the world) -Pietistic Lutheranism (tries to MEAN it when they hold to Lutheran doctrine and practice, but strays into weird territory if they aren't grounded in the Confessions). The VLP is in the Pietist tradition of Lutheranism, which has a pretty good track record of avoiding piss-earth influence. But nonetheless, it's a minor presence. We're working to change that with the house church network. Thankfully it is slowly and steadily growing.

The latest Sex&Marriage is now up! So I'm sure you've heard it before: "chicks dig jerks." Is that true? If it is true, should a single man take advantage of that and BECOME a jerk? And if he does, what can he expect? Let's dive into the concept. Audio: https://soundcloud.com/verylutheran/sexmarriage-on-chi Video: https://youtu.be/HVDItpq19ng

This is how you know the past 5 generations were anti Christian. https://youtu.be/OTdi3PryS3g The only conclusion I can thinking of is that the devil whispered in some old geezer's ear that scary puppets were the best way to win children to the true faith.
