Dutch farmland has a major water quality problem, in part due to the overload of manure ending up in ditches. Turns out that farmers have found a workaround: in just 7 years, they made 30,000 ditches disappear by filling them up, 1/3 of those illegally.
Bad for biodiversity and water management.

Professor in international law Marieke de Hoon: when Greenland was threatened, Europe emphasised territorial integrity.
But when the US and Israel started their evidently illegal attack on Iran, many countries, incl. the Netherlands, showed 'understanding'. This hypocrisy is noted in the global South.

European electricity prices are not immune to the gas price shock, since in many hours of the year, gas-fired power plants set the price, as the marginal producers.
The maps show the differences for baseload power to be delivered next quarter, between last Friday (left) and today (right). In the Netherlands, a jump from €70 to €100 per MWh!

European gas price now up 48% since Friday!
And Dutch gas storages at a very low level (10% filled).
But: no incentive at all for commercial companies to start filling up again: prices throughout the year are higher than those for next winter. If we want the storages filled, governments need to act.

Last Tuesday, a spokesman of Dutch state-owned Gasunie said that the historical low in gas storage filling (11% of capacity) was no problem. But, he added, 'we wouldn't want a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz'.
Now, Gasunie says that the attack came at an unfortunate moment, and that our gas may become very expensive once more.

1. Highest priority for electricity grid congestion. Better use of capacity by incentives in grid fees, flex contracts, and energy hubs. A crisis-law grid congestion to accelerate permitting procedures for grid expansion.

Within 18 months, the new Dutch coalition govt will have to come up with binding emission reduction targets for the period up to 2050, with carbon budgets in line with the Paris Agreement's 'well below 2°C, aiming for 1.5°C' of global warming. Tough task, after we kicked the can down the road.

As was the case in the @Urgenda climate verdict, some politicians will complain that 'the judge has taken the role of politics', but no. Signing treaties (and the Paris Agreement, with which the binding targets will have to be in line) has consequences, and citizens have (human) rights.

Environmental Assessment Agency PBL had already warned government that the 2030 climate target was getting out of reach, but government (the latest one led by climate denying PVV) did not have to take effective action because it was an 'aspirational target'. New targets will have to be binding.

In the case, brought by Greenpeace, the court ruled, based on human rights treaties, that the Netherlands has to establish binding emission targets on its way to climate neutrality by 2050. That goal is enshrined in the ClimaLaw, but the intermediary 2030 target (-55%) is still an 'ambition'.
