Greetings, kids.
*Please keep in mind I wrote this while battling fatigue. So...yeah.
So, with Discord enshittifying further and faster :dumpster_fire: , our hero rolls his eyes and starts looking for alternatives to move his small community to.
Man, it just seems to roll on, doesn't it? This great, firey dumpster we call the web? And the services we've come to rely on for keeping up with our friends and fam are all falling to the wave of hyper capitalistic surveilance state bullshit.
"But why move? C'mon, Dane. They won this round. We just need to bite the bullet. Just stay on Discord and gut it up. Everybody's tired of jumping from service to service! If you leave, you're going to be alone out there, on whatever sparsely populated app/network you've switched to for your moment of virtue signaling! Stay where the people are!"
No.
These days, I'm used to a shrinking circle of friends. I left a bunch behind on Facebook, instagram, and Twitter. I moved to the Fediverse, and much to my enjoyment, found very real people to connect with. And I don't take these moves lightly. They can be a pain in the ass, honestly. App/protocol hopping is not something you want to do very often.
I don't leave these platforms to virtue signal. I leave because - for me - it's the right thing to do. It's because the platform has gone a direction that I fundamentally can't get behind. Discord has done that with their age verification rollout, not to mention the connections to Palantir and Peter Thiel.
I've made three different accounts on three alternative services. I'm tired. But I keep going because Big Tech are the ones running me off. The more they treat me like product, the more I'm ready to ditch them.
I'm not giving you my ID. You're not getting a facial scan. I'll land somewhere else, and I'll make do, because fuck you.
