Or is from England and cannot imagine that a good food culture can mean more than: “I like the taste of some stuff and everyone else in my country consumes food too.”

I’ve moved to England 5 years ago. I can confirm a worrying amount of people don’t care for food at all here. Instead of a nice meal, when they want to enjoy a convivial moment, they burn shredded black leaves in boiling water, add milk to it to cover the terrible taste, and call that tea. And if you don’t ruin it in the exact specific way that they designed, they get angry (but they don’t understand why e.g. Italian and French people are so particular about their traditional recipes). Send help.

I think the reason paw patrol is on there is it can be viewed as police state propaganda. I never watched it, so I can’t speak for that, but I do know some people genuinely think that. I am thus not too sure that this is done ironically.

And I am talking about the fact that believing that nothing is complicated and that complexity is always made up can be a dangerous, anti-intellectual and anti-academic argument. Of course, if you’re talking with people who don’t need the actually do the job and only understand enough of it you still speak like to a specialist, you’re not only in the middle, but also potentially (but not necessarily) kind of a dick. But reading this and you’re example, and the fact we seem to be miscommunicating somewhat, I do wonder this: English is not my first language, what do you include in “technical science job”. Is it a specific job or group of jobs? I took it to mean any job with tech or science workers.

My point being that for some stuff, you just can’t describe things as bags within bags, irrelevant of where you are on the scale, at least not being without quite dishonest and oversimplifying. I am not saying I am on too of the scale, I am saying I’ve met and worked with people on top of the scale (and couldn’t keep up), and they don’t explain things with bags within bags.

I am often torn a bit on this one, depending on the cases. Don’t get me wrong, management lingo is undeniably bullshit, trying to hide how simple what you’re saying actually is, and giving yourself stature and legitimacy. But I would argue that there are fields were the emergence of complex concepts (and lingo, and notations to define them) is a necessary evil. For sure even there, there are people who abuse it to big themselves up, but I also think a lot of the time, either the thing you’re speaking of is genuinely complicated, or it’s just not well understood enough. Sometimes I really wish I could say things in a simpler way, both in concepts and expression, but I can’t find a way to make it so. Not by malice, not to appear to know more, but genuinely because I don’t understand it enough yet either and that’s the best I’ve got. Having experienced it first-hand, I am more forgiving to this (depending on the attitude of the person spouting the jargon) and don’t automatically assume all technical-sounding terms are automatically bullshit. They often are, but not always. But management lingo is. 100%.

Microsoft still riding the high of replacing the Super key with the Windows key back in windows 95, and trying to replicate it. There was an “Office” key instead of ctrl right only a few years ago, which was a total fumble. Here’s hoping the same fate awaits the copilot key, that’ll make for fun stories in tech museums in a few years.

The cultural fit in particular I like to use. This is often thrown around as a catch-all term by companies when they don’t want to hire you for a bunch of bullshit reasons they don’t want to disclose to you. It’s only fair you weaponise too. Had to use it recently to reject an offer and to avoid saying: “the person who would be my manager seemed like a gigantic dickhead and I barely made it the hour without slamming my monitor against the wall”. Although part of me wish I had said that.

I was going to try and defend them by saying that given the number of recent layoffs, and the push from the higher-ups, they’re not necessarily vibe coders by choice. But then I remembered, I don’t give a shit about a company where devs think that rendering characters to a terminal emulator is a PhD-level problem, and that it’s a good idea to use react native in your start menu, to only name two.

Teams is hot garbage. Just having it open in the background sucks the performance right out of your laptop. And I find the fact that MS tries to force it to be their portal to the rest of their atrocious apps to be infuriating. But what do you expect from a company that codes their start menu with react native.

At work: without a hint of hesitation, Microsoft Teams and Visual Studio. Do I really need to explain the issues with Teams? As for Visual Studio: extremely slow startup time, idiotic msvc compiler, yappy copilot who won’t shut up, needlessly opaque “solution” format, moronic intellisense false positives, anything useful being hidden between layers of sloppy menus, and more… I have my own build scripts, compile with clang, and edit with whatever. I only use that piece of shit to debug and when it’s time to commit, to make sure it’ll work on my colleagues’ environments, as I don’t want to be the annoying contrarian, but it really bums me out. On my personal machines: gnome. I have a love hate relationship with Gnome, because on the one hand, I agree with most design decisions and appreciate not having to spend any time configuring a lot of stuff, so it suits me very well, and on the other hand I get angry on the odd occurrence where I disagree with the philosophy and I have to install an extension which I know will break at every update.

The “optimist” in me wants to believe that the idiots who have all the power and money will never be satisfied and thus will keep crushing us to the point where the conditions for forcibly removing them from power will be met: enough of us will feel there is nothing else to do and nothing to lose. As for what comes after that… Lots of instability and misery for a while, with the hope that whatever emerges is better and fairer than what we have now.
