Today there was something on the radio news about an industry trade fair that feels like a good summary of the whole "generative AI" thing. The reporter was talking about what vendors are showing, and one thing was an "AI powered" factory monitoring tool: "So instead of looking at numbers you can mail with the AI and talk about what might be wrong."
It's hard to express just how useless that is. When monitoring a system numbers (and predictable analysis/alerting/graphing on top) is exactly what I want. But: It probably looks great to a manager who has no idea what the numbers and graphs mean and now feels like they understand (not understand, but feels like they do).
In short: It looks great as long as you understand neither how the "AI" works nor the field it's being applied to. :neocat_glare:
(Unfortunately neither seemed to apply to the reporter either. :neocat_floof_sad:)

What do I do if I notice a questionable-smelling pattern of open source contributions, but no clear proof of motivation or malice? A Github organization that looks like it's mostly commit farming and trying to collect un-/barely maintained projects, has a website that looks fishy (including mentioning having "supported" projects where someone got a trivial commit merged)… and then the only seemingly consistently active person in the group is trying to become a #Debian Maintainer based on that (and adopting orphaned packages).
Don't want to throw around names without being sure someone's malicious, but also don't want to keep quiet and later find my suspicion was justified. And of course picking up abandoned projects is generally desirable, but these look like barely used ones, too, which again… not bad as such, but smells. What to do? :neocat_floof__w_:
