APOD from 2007-04-09

Aurora Over Alaska

Auroras occur 60-1000 km above Earth, created by solar-induced energetic particles hitting atmospheric molecules. Often forming rings around magnetic poles, this enhanced 2005 photo of an aurora borealis over Bear Lake, Alaska, was 2006's Wikipedia Commons Picture of the Year.
