As I prep for another Ferments session I'm trying to lean into the Milieu concept from the genre fiction guideline MICE (Milieu, Idea, Character, Event).
This goes beyond having the environment act (see recent @slyflourish@chirp.enworld.org blogs) into developing the setting like you would a character.
This is one of the aspects of Dune, but it's also part of Call of the Wild. It can be expressed as Human v Nature, but here I'm hoping the characters don't maintain an adversarial relationship to The Ferments.
