The Tornado Watch for DC itself has been canceled, but various other areas (mostly to the north) may still be affected. Strong winds still predicted for later this evening. Any hatches should best remain battened down for now.

@BillMcGuire@mastodon.social That's not how proof or evidence works. You can't just challenge people to prove a negative and then say "gotcha!". I note that you have offered no proof that you're not a space alien. The burden is on those making the extraordinary claims to offer evidence for them. The people selling the "Musk rigged the voting machines" story have offered no evidence whatsoever, not even an explanation for how he COULD have done it. It's bullshit, plain and simple.

Ravenswood's four main smokestacks remind me of the Titanic, and the similarity doesn't end there. About a year after Big Allis was put into service and the plant completed, the great blackout of 1965 badly damaged the generator due to a design flaw that required months to identify and mitigate. At least nothing sank.

Known locally as "Big Allis" (after Allis-Chalmers, the manufacturer of the largest of the four generators in the plant), Ravenswood is fired by both natural gas (now the primary fuel) and oil, and also has the capability (rarely used, as far as I know) to burn coal. Ravenswood has been linked to a spike in asthma and other respiratory disorders among local residents. There is pressure to decommission the generators and replace them with battery banks to store renewable energy from upstate.

@lin11c@toad.social the people you’re citing are election deniers who are raising money to “prove” that the 2024 election was rigged. They’re suckering statistically unsophisticated Harris supporters with nonsensical but complex pseudo mathematical bullshit. Please don’t promote this stuff.

Also, it's simply too late to make any major changes to election systems this year. Primaries have already started, and the general election is in eight months. I think it's reasonable to suspect that the play here is simply to set the stage for casting doubt on election outcomes that they regard as unfavorable.

RE: @SuffolkLITLab@esq.social

The ProPublica piece is kind of a mess - it doesn't even mention CISA by name - but some of the issues are concerning. In particular, the proposals are extremely vague.

They want to ban "voting machines" (under what authority?). Does that mean touchscreen DREs? Fine, that's what virtually all technical experts have recommended for a while. Or do they mean any electronic tabulation, including optical scan paper ballots (widely used and amenable to reliable post-election audits)?

Photo nerditry: I really like the NYA-EVO photo backpack system, which consists of lightweight packs with padded insert modules. They just came out with an updated version of the small (large daypack) size pack, the Fjord 36C, and the older version is on sale at B&H for $199 (plus inserts). What I like about this system is that I can quickly take out the padded camera inserts and I've got a lightweight (internal frame) backpack for general use, with pockets and zippers in all the right places.

@CStamp@mastodon.social Personally, I think the makeup made the movie weaker. In particular, none of the doctors who examine her see anything wrong, which made no sense. Something was obviously wrong with her! Also, I've walked up and down those steps many times, and have never once seen a priest flying past.

You can get a special radio that monitors NOAA weather for weather-related alerts and sounds an alarm when one comes in, but they don't always relay other emergencies. Unfortunately, there don't seem to be similar consumer EAS alert monitors. You have to have your radio or TV on to get them.

Aside: Emergency alerting in the US is highly distributed, which is both a strength and a weakness. Mobile phone carriers push out "Wireless Emergency Alerts" (WEAs), which probably have the most reach these days. But these alerts depend on both the local cellular infrastructure (to reach your phone) and the Internet (to reach the carrier in the first place). Broadcasters (radio, TV, cable systems) send alerts via the "Emergency Alert System), which can interrupt whatever's broadcasting. 1/

If you're doing architectural or cityscape photography, it's helpful to have a working understanding of zero, one, two, and three point perspective (normally taught to draftspeople, illustrators and painters). This photo is an example of (mostly) one point perspective (depth), and I was mostly thinking of Vermeer's Little Street when I composed it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Little_Street

Union Square West between 16th and 17th Streets in Manhattan is home to five distinctive and variously historically significant narrow mid-rise buildings. The quirky Decker Building (2nd from left, at 33 Union Square West) is now chiefly residential with a retail ground floor storefront. From 1967-1973 the building housed Andy Warhol's "Factory" studio, where, in 1968, he was famously and nearly fatally shot by an irate Valarie Solanas. The neighborhood was more colorful back then.

The reports about the IEDs thrown at the anti-Islamic protest and counter-protests in NYC Saturday all say it was at the Mayor’s residence (Gracie Mansion). But the IEDs appear actually to have been thrown around 80th and East End, a quiet upscale residential neighborhood a good half a mile from the mansion (which is at 89th St, inside Carl Schurz Park).

@SteveBellovin@infosec.exchange As president, Trump has very little ability to directly control elections (which are governed by states), but considerable indirect power (through moves like this) to disrupt them or cast doubt on the legitimacy of outcomes. Here, the play seems to be to initiate high profile investigations to make it appear as if there's some kind of new evidence of fraud.

Scientist, safecracker, etc. McDevitt Professor of Computer Science and Law at Georgetown. Formerly UPenn, Bell Labs. So-called expert on election security and stuff. https:// twitter.com/mattblaze on the Twitter. Slow photographer. Radio nerd. Blogs occasionally at https://www. mattblaze.org/blog . I probably won't see your DM; use something else. He/Him. Uses this wrong.

@SteveBellovin@infosec.exchange Once again, as in GA, I strongly suspect the goal is not to produce any actual criminal indictments (which would be hindered by both the absence of actual evidence and an expired statute of limitations), but rather to cast doubt on the legitimacy of elections where Trump or favored candidates lost, setting the stage for mistrust of 2026 outcomes.

The glass curtain grid and distorted reflection of midtown reminded me of Saul Bass's iconic title sequence for North By Northwest (and imitated in Mad Men's credits), though this is across town. Hitchcock's opening also employed a somewhat different perspective, looking downward, and at a sharper angle. Here, our focus is on the impressionistically rendered Times Square skyline rather than on the street below.

The Rodenstock 138mm/6.5 has a floating internal element that has to move as it's focused. It has to be focused with a helical ring (like an SLR lens) that moves the focus and the internal element together, rather than simply by moving it back and forth with a bellows. This makes the lens big, heavy, and cumbersome (not to mention spendy), but it's very sharp.

Captured with the Rodenstock 70mm/5.6 Digaron lens and a bit of vertical shift. The afternoon light highlights the basic arched form of the bridge structure against the background and foreground foliage. A polarizer darkened the clear winter sky. The Taft Bridge, named for the famously portly US president and SCOTUS chief justice, is the largest unreinforced concrete bridge in the world. Comprising seven major arches over Rock Creek Park, it links the Kalorama and Woodly Park neighborhoods.
