@benjamineskola@hachyderm.io
mastodon 4.5.7

Software engineer, socialist. London, but from up north. Learning Finnish.

Anti-AI, pro-human.

(nb. I hate to do this but if you’re going to follow me please have a bio and/or posts etc. — it feels weird to be followed by someone when I can’t tell anything about them.)

The lib dems are an embarrassment https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cy0dz1k0rr4o

Support for nuclear weapons is honestly incomprehensible.

RE: @evan@cosocial.ca

Glad to see there’s a general agreement that LLM-generated software has no place on the fediverse.

Unfortunately the people who use LLMs to generate software will probably ignore this or convince themselves that *their* usage is okay, *their* usage doesn’t count because it’s different, etc.

I've never liked the autocomplete suggestions — I turned off even the individual-word suggestions in iOS years back, and the phrase suggestions are much more obnoxious than that.

Apparently they're even worse than I'd realised, though.

i have a feeling that everyone who is arguing about LLMs in the sense of stuff like productivity, quality of the output, performance or functionality of generated code, largely even licensing or whatn

@q66 for me there’s a sort of, idk feedback loop? between the quality/productivity aspect and the ethical aspect. like: even if these were sufficiently ethical, they’re not actually any good at what they’re supposed to be good at, so why bother? and even if they were actually effective and useful tools, they’re completely unethical and so unusable. can’t escape from either side.

RE: @cwebber@social.coop

I’ve defended systemd before because I think most of the criticism is over the top, but this is annoying.

Switched my servers (home and VPS) over from tailscale to wireguard this weekend. Works nicely on #FreeBSD in particular. #Debian was a little less straightforward but still not bad.

Next task is to figure out DNS rather than hardcoding the IP addresses. Not entirely sure what the right option is: I only want it for the sake of three addresses, and in particular don't want to send all my DNS through the VPS. I'd even just put everything in /etc/hosts, but I'd like it to distinguish between the VPN being up or down.

Satisfying to tidy up some repeated code that had been building up over the last couple of months. 340 lines deleted across 32 files.

Don't automate writing boilerplate, delete it.

I’m obviously against the death penalty but I do wonder if it should perhaps have been abolished for everybody *except* the royal family.

Just to focus their attention, you know.
