@PepperTheVixen okay, I have a solution, it is for windows though, so might not be useful unless you can translate it to your os. it uses vlc and looping the constant playing of white noise on low volume

@anon_opin my brother in law who is an american had one of these, it cost a packet to run and was a mess to park in the UK. he and my sister went back to the states and the truck went with him and my sister, and a few weeks later, the truck's engine blew up and they went for something smaller. now it's an ex truck.

@FreakyFwoof I told windows it was a **** and a ****! and then went settings diving. what a mess the setup is now. talk about hunting for a needle in a haystack. I think it must have been an update that did all this, for it has only just happened. all power saving junk and all that, and on a pc too. what's the point? laptops yes, but a pc?

@FreakyFwoof snobbish? if you work the way you do, you need good gear and what's the point of using diffrent kit for regular pc use than that which you'd use for music production? may as well route the whole lot through the same kit. another thing my pc decided to do, not of my wanting, was to turn off my analogue headphones on my main board sound. and what a mess it was to find that setting and re-enable it. Raging.
