In making a deal with Musk for Tesla to supply energy, the UK has taken on a national security risk. It seems pretty irresponsible to put critical infrastructure in the hands of a foreign agent who interferes with your self-governance and elections.

@gedeonm@mastodon.social I may be reading incorrectly, but it seems like Kavanaugh proved Jackson’s point, “Kavanaugh noted that the increase in government applications is not unique to Trump, saying the court also granted similar requests made by the Biden administration, __albeit at a lower rate.__” [emphasis added] The higher rate of willingness under Trump is exactly her point.

As a company that has long boasted about its commitment to principles, Apple has had a bad several months. It removed ICE Block from the App Store. It let X remain, empowering its users to create child porn, which is apparently “free speech” now. After two American citizens were killed by ICE, Tim Cook responded by attending a special screening of the Melania documentary. It’ll be hard to believe that Apple believes anything it says after all this. When principles mattered, Apple collapsed.

“We are ending 2025 with every major social media platform fully or partially controlled by Trump-friendly US billionaires.” This is true, and it’s why I’m glad that I spend most of my social media time on this smaller, decentralized social media platform that is decidedly not de facto moderated by the government. Mastodon’s status as algorithm-free forgoes monetization in exchange for avoiding the downside consequence of viral engagement-driven content.

While politicians and news orgs can accept some tradeoffs for audience access, X is run by a guy that takes revenge on people he disagrees with — defacing and banning accounts, lawsuits — and whose words and actions suggest he’s a white supremacist and antisemite. And, CarPlay still messes with me by making every focused button look disabled. I manage some relatives’ phones, and I’m leaving them on iOS 18.

This is a smart move by @Mastodon@mastodon.social. #Twitter / #X journalism is struggling, and #Threads doesn’t want journalism. Mastodon is leaning into it though, “To reinforce and encourage Mastodon as the go-to place for journalism, we’re launching a new feature today.” I think this is a lever for differentiation; making Mastodon more valuable to journalists and users.
