The TL;DR is that training AI on copyrighted works falls under the Fair Use exemptions in copyright law

This judgement was reversed by the next federal judge that reviewed AI, in the Meta case.

It is far from legally settled whether training is fair use or not.

Once companies started suing people trying to practice “responsible disclosure”, I stopped attacking people that choose maximum disclosure. Responsible disclosure has always been a bit of a hedge. It’s rare to be able to show you are actually the first person/organization to discover a vulnerability.

I’m fine with people with dependents getting higher priority. If you have one pill, one sick person, and one healthy person, you don’t give each of them half a pill for equality sake. https://welleatyouupweloveyouso.com/2023/08/14/what-does-equity-and-equality-have-to-do-with-being-spoiled/ But, also, society in general and employers in specific should strive to provide a level of flexibility to all employees where all of them find joy in their lives.

Yeah, for a fixed ruleset that can be provided up front the Alpha-Zero approach seems to work great. These tasks strike me as a bit different. I'm sure the ruleset is fixed somewhere, but it's not disclosed to the participants. In the task I walked myself through, there was a new wrinkle in each part -- a new interactable, a (more) hidden goal, or an information limit. And, of course, part of the task is "discovering" all that from the bitmap frame(s) provided. I'm unconvinced of the hype around "AI", but this does seem like a legitimate research target that might stymie the Alpha{Go,Zero,Fold} series at least a bit.

The founder of ARC worked at Google until 2024 and wrote 2.5+ books in Deep Learning. So, I expect some of these benchmarks are based on limitations seen in Deepmind. That said, it would be interesting to see how well Deepmind does at these tasks. My understanding is that the private tasks would still be dynamic enough to require "on the job training" so an Alpha-Go / Alpha-Zero / Alpha-Fold approach is unlikely to do well on ARC-AGI-3. Still, I think commentary around models (including, but not limited to something from Deepmind) attempting these tasks would be much more interesting than most of the discourse around generative AI, whether text, image, video, or code generation.

I finished one of the tasks. And, I imagine I could finish at least some of the others. But, I wasn't being paid, and it wasn't very entertaining, so I stopped. EDIT: Got all the way through several other tasks that suddenly looked interesting while watching the replays available of the frontier models. If you paid me $250, I'd finish them all, though probably not optimally. I still don't know how I'd do against the private sets. They should ad a "global" and "friends-only" leaderboard (like the Zachtronics games, etc.) and really see the competition (at least human competition) heat up.

Android and desktop. I'm no UX designer, so I don't know what the ideal is, but when I'm using the software with a purpose, anything that gets in the way of that purpose is (at best) an annoyance. I'm probably wrong, but I think I'd prefer a passive notification to verify pin / donate / whatever that triggers after/as I leave Signal for something else -- a indicator I'm done with my purpose (albeit flawed; maybe I just need to copy info from FF or whatever.)

I agree with all your points, BUT I do think Signal could be slightly less "user-hostile" with the reminders, maybe? I get annoyed at the pop-ups in my Linux system, too, and all of them are got similarly legitimate reasons. Getting the way of my current task (or worse stealing focus) doesn't ever seem like the "right" way for computers/tools to behave.

Proton has the disadvantage of having to work with other email services as well, so there's protocol limitations. When mailing from one Proton mailbox to another, they do intentionally avoid SMTP for this reason, but Signal has the advantage of "owning" the whole protocol, too. I imagine if you donate with a CC to Signal, they might also be forced to turn that over. The weakness is not in Signal or Proton, but in the Visa/Mastercard duopoly and CC processing in general. Cryptocurrency has some advantages here, but they are outweighed by the abuse, fraud, speculation, and general dishonestly (and just general failure to be good currencies for "normal" purchases.)

I wish I learned the lessons from that language 12 years earlier than I did. I still prefer to write personal code in that family of languages, and it made me a better coder even in Java, JavaScript, Python, even C. Also, that year is actually the first year it was available and my first year in college; it might have focused me enough to actually go to grad school and start a PL research career. I don’t know if that would be better, but it would be different. The people calling out BTC is also a pretty good idea, but I made a little money on BTC, and I’m not sure too much more money would be a positive change in my life. It could be, but I think it might have made me more covetous and more isolated. But, I often choose to program instead of playing video games these days, so it’s clearly something I enjoy, even if I don’t currently monetize it. Thanks for asking.

Also, my preference shouldn’t matter to anyone else. If you want to increase you proof assistant skill (even from nothing), I suggest lean. Probably the same if you want to increase programming skill in a dependently typed language. Honestly, I should get more comfortable with it.

Right now, I’m spending more time in Idris. It’s not a great proof assistant, but I think it’s a lot easier to write programs in. Rocq is the real proof assistant I’ve used, but I don’t have a strong opinion on them because all the proofs I’ve wanted/needed to write where small enough to need minimal assistance. (The bare bones features that are in Agda or Idris were enough.)
