🍵🥧PLUMS, PICNICS & THE NARROW BRIDGE🙏📿

Nao-san hosts a small tea ceremony for her weeping ume tree✨

secluded house-
enough plum blossoms

One of Kyōto's most photographed pieces of scenery is a stretch of garden behind Jōnan-gū's (城南宮) main shrine. Here winter and spring collide with plum blossoms cascading over fallen camellia flowers...bright dots in a verdant green carpet. #Jōnangū #城南宮 #Kyoto #京都 #Japan

🗺️🤔SOUTH OF THE CAPITAL🧭🌸

Second only to Kitano Tenmangū as the go-to destination for plum blossoms, Jōnan-gū's "Spring Mountain" (春の山) reimagines a Heian-period style garden.

even the mean monks
come to eat rice cakes-
God of Jōnan
腹あしき僧も餅くへ城南神
-Yosa-no-Buson (与謝蕪村).

🍑🌸BEWILDERING BLOSSOMS🌰🍊

Spring's great conundrum...which blossom is which?🤔

There comes a period in the year when species of ume, quince, peach, cherry and almond trees can all be seen in bloom🔍😵‍💫

Although oni are a common sight at Setsubun, Rozan-ji (廬山寺) has an origin story for its own 3 ogres. When the temple's founder, Ryōgen (良源 912-85), was in training he was bothered by 3 troublesome oni (or spirits, depending on what version of the tale you read). #Kyoto #鬼

In early Edo times a superstition emerged that dreaming of the following was particularly auspicious: *Ichi-Fuji (一富士 Mt. Fuji) *Ni-taka (二鷹 a Hawk) *San-nasubi (三茄子 an Eggplant) Although there are theories, it's unclear why these objects were placed together on a list.

Daikokuten (大黒天) has a an extensive CV: he is god of commerce and prosperity, the patron of cooks, farmers and bankers, guardian of crops, and he is also considered to be a demon hunter. Perpetually smiling, he is often shown sitting on bales of rice (representing abundance).
