Question for the #Nordics #scandics #svensk What is the history of saffron in Sweden? Santa Lucia buns are obviously a thing but thinking mostly about swedish fish soup which is heavy on the saffron. There must be story about how something cheap (fish, presumably) ends up combined with something that must have been hideously expensive (the saffron) in what is presumably a celebratory but also a hearty dish with lots of options to supplement?

Also shout out to Borgeby Kryddgård in Bjärred who make a really good fish soup spice kit!

One for the #reproducibility nerds

Is there an accepted standard (or just some good examples) of how to include provenance metadata within computationally produced images

My specific use case is graphs generated by plotly (python) saved as png where I'd like to record some things like date, software version, data version in the image metadata

There are exif elements for date and "software" but is there a better solution than just shoving info in the description and/or title field? Something that can survive passage through a presentation an added bonus!

(And yes, I do want this in the image metadata, not as a separate file, I'll use the same info to write out a separate manifest)

Question for font nerds! The attached image is from a 1896 lithograph (Orr's Southern Stars, published by Gall and Inglis, engraving possibly William Peacock and co) .

I'm interested in knowing a) whether this is a specific type font and/or b) what a close modern font might be (ideally an accessible or openly licensed one)

What's better than open research information resource? Multiple open research information resources that can be combined together!

Today we're starting ORION, an effort to coordinate amongst those making ORI resources available in the cloud, with an initial focus on Google BigQuery.

We are keen to coordinate with all who are interested in supporting a community effort towards availability and reusability!

The release of the 2025 Leiden Ranking marks an series of critical steps towards a more open research information system.

It is great to see the Open Edition placed side by side with the traditional version of Ranking. Debates continue on the qualities and risks of moving to fully open research information systems. Putting the evidence together is key to having an informed conversation.

But perhaps more exciting for me is the opportunity it illustrates to expand the Ranking and make it more inclusive.

My main criticism of the Leiden Ranking methodology has always been that it excludes non-English and diverse outputs that don't fit into the definition of "core" journals.

Now we can see how that inclusion shifts the picture. And as always the work and the data from the @cwts@social.cwts.nl shows the highest standards of technical quality and transparency.

This is a great step forward and demonstration of what can be done with Open Research Information

Dear Hive Mind. Looking for good examples from ~2015 of scholarly or scholarly adjacent services/infrastructures failing.

I've got examples of corporate capture, but struggling to find examples of actual closure because they've left very little trace

Friendfeed is one example, alongside a million other social media offerings, but I'm looking for something that the general scholarly reader would recognise and remember ideally
