Not a physician, utility-bikes a lot (~5000km/year), DFH, works on Go compiler. (I do not speak for my employer.) Sometimes know things about programming languages, (cargo) bicycles, lilies, Florida.

He/him. Ex(?) Florida Man.
Now near Boston, MA, USA.
Married to a sociologist.
Tootfinder searchable.

Biased towards following people unlike me but with overlapping interests.

I'm aware that not everyone can ride a bike, it's been mentioned once or twice in the past.

Is Our Computers Learning?

"The name on your account must exactly match the name on your reservations to ensure that you receive mileage credit and other benefits."

Global Entry number matches, passport number matches, date of birth matches, but no, if there's a difference in the name, including that usually optional middle initial and/or full middle name, I'm sorry, we were too busy training LLMs to handle basic fucking database 101.

#golang It's a minor thing, but I am virtually certain that Renee French (artist who did the original Go Gophers) is not a fan of AI-generated Go Gopher images. That horse might be out of the barn, but so far, I have not used AI for any images except tests of the AI itself, so, not quite everyone is doing it.

Dear adventurous Go users who are playing with SIMD in 1.26 pre-release. Coding your feature checks like this: ``` func init() { useAVX512 = archsimd.X86.AVX512() } ``` will yield not-best code, because the compiler is looking for guards that check archsimd.X86.AVX512() in order to (whenever there is a choice) enable the AVX512 versions of operations, e.g., mask registers versus bit masks, that sort of thing. (512-bit vectors will also force AVX512). #golang #golangnuts

Parenthetically, where ARE all these "Iranian unrest is a CIA/Mossad black op" drive-bys coming from? There's something very smelly about the social media activity around this rebellion.

@cstross@wandering.shop back when I cared about Twitter trolls and paid attention to other people's work on it, someone, don't recall who, had a substantial list of inauthentic Iranian-looking accounts, I think generally supporting the government. So, could be those.

Just noting that "terrorist" has become so over-used and diluted that today it's a generic bad word, much as "communist" was in the 1950s, that denotes dislike on the part of the speaker. Unless there

@cstross@wandering.shop I'm not thrilled that two useful tools for analyzing news/opinion nowadays is a combination of "count corpses" and "are they trying to get me to ignore some corpses?" The third useful tool is of course "is it bullshit?"

@mattblaze@federate.social @cstross@wandering.shop @Migueldeicaza@mastodon.social It depends on the safe language. I've translated C into Java, "pointers" gets translated based on whether they are truly pointers, pointers indexed into a single array, or pointers indexed into multiple arrays. "Free" becomes a no-op, "locals" that are addressed become heap allocated. Array bounds are checked, there is no use-after-free. This will be harder w/o a GC, if they just hulk-smash it into Rust with unsafe, that will be bad.
