So a bunch of anti-trans hate groups sent a citizen's petition to the FDA demanding regulatory action around "cross-sex" use of estrogen. Although the language is somewhere heated and while we have no indications as to the FDA's intent with respect to this petition, I have no reason not to believe the authors of this article when they describe its potential impact if adopted: https://theneedlenews.com/anti-trans-hate-groups-petitioning-fda-for-registry-of-trans-women-crackdown-on-transition-newly-revealed-document-shows/

Many, many years ago, at school for CS and before that interning at NASA Ames, I learned to take programming seriously as engineering work, and also the level of rigor that engineering work requires. In the intervening thirty years, I have had to come to terms with the degree to which this attitude is rare in theory and vanishingly rare in practice again and again. Tooling has gotten better, but the rigor applied to the average line of code has gotten worse.
I would hope that safety-critical systems would be different, and in some cases they really are. However, the number of people who want to build secure communications systems that they want to be safety critical and who expect thousands of people to literally use in a case where a breach of the threat model means the users will die and who as developers cannot bother to meet the basic design rigor requirement of 2006 — have a fucking threat model that is accurate and up to date — will never cease to shock me.
I would hope that safety-critical systems would be different, and in some cases they really are. Probably mostly not my audience here, but I'm currently looking for a business-side/CEO cofounder for an encrypted radio startup. There are solid funding options, but while I can build the team to make the product happen, I'm not the person to navigate the money side of things. I'm looking for a cofounder with previous startup CEO experience and executive-level experience (although not necessarily CEO) in a hardware startup specifically. EU citizen and resident, although it'll be a remote team, so where is less important.

Oh good, I'm glad you've got enough of a copy to track changes. I'm assuming various folks have versioned mirrors with all the initial "oops we forgot that bit" stuff in them, but it's tough finding complete mirrors that do with unrestricted search heads on them.

It's a lot to engage with if you want to dig into the history deeply, but I think there's a lot more to be gained by digging into it broadly instead. Even the very tasty last and loose version that the Davids did in the Dawn of Everything has a lot to say when you read across it into this narrative.
I guess thinking where this came from is useful also from the perspective of accepting the impermanence of this order of knowledge and dreaming about what can come after, even if there's going to be a generation or three between now and then. Understanding this now breaking notion of knowledge as having been just as intentionally designed to suit the needs of power as the disinformation etc wave that's breaking it is interesting.

If I were to extend this metaphor slightly, I'd say that the plate tectonics driving this earthquake is yes all of the changes in the technological process of information, but more deeply the geological tensions built into the concept of the enlightenment — itself a thing constructed from the rubble of at least three societies and used as the bedrock on which to build modernity.
Another thread here is the success of the 50s red scare and cointel-pro at suppressing the practice of peer grassroots political education among the left, leaving the social counternarratives that could have stabilized some parts of the political landscape to obscurantist academic work and it's non-academic counterculture opposites.

Thanks! While it's great to tell folks about the tools that are out there, it's good for them to know what scale they need to think about, especially if they're on-prem, and even more important for them to understand the time footprint. Staffing demands seem to push a lot of small shops toward MDR.

This is great for what it covers, but I think some rubrics for level of effort would be really useful — every environment is different, but for this audience even a little bit of intuition would be useful. For example, "for all logs (system, network, firewall, etc.), a good estimate is 15mb/day/workstation or 30mb/server [not numbers I've checked], so expect to need to store 54Gb for a hundred workstations and then servers with a minimum thirty days of retention", or "if you want to set up an oncall rotation for 24x7 coverage, a minimum of six trained staff to share the load is needed and this should be considered about 25% of their workload on weeks when they're on duty, assuming you don't get more than a handful of alerts a day".
