Talked to Wikipedians about AI all day. A thing that came through loud and clear: editors are experiencing AI as an outright high-volume assault. That is related to, but much more intense than, “I tried AI in 2024 and it sucks”. People building AI tools for wikipedians have to grapple with that.

I am not sure how you draw a policy line here that protects the LWNs/OSMs/WMFs of the world without making it impossible to do socially-beneficial extraction of data from our data monopolist overlords. But someone needs to be thinking about that, very hard.

@not2b @mattblaze sorry, if you can pay thousands to get across the Pacific or Atlantic to get to Yosemite, you can pay a hundred extra bucks to get in. (Also, it’s been a while since I’ve been to Yosemite, but at Yellowstone most of the foreign tourists are coming in on bus tours and are prepaid, so I’m skeptical this really impacts entrance times very much.)

I’ve told LF (and others) repeatedly that “education” as the leading point is insulting. Many maintainers know exactly what they need to do, but they lack time and energy for it. Lecturing them, I mean “giving them skills”, is… rarely the need or solution.
But “education” allows LF (and friends like GH) to continue elephant-in-the-room-ing the actual solution, which is paying maintainers for the trillions of dollars of value they create.

@NoortjeMarres @rachelcoldicutt is this a definition of "community" that presumes that a community must have some self-identity distinct from geographic communities? Here in SF there's definitely a sense that a community is under threat from AVs, but it's not "the immigrant community" or the "gay community", it's "the community of people who use the streets" (which is understood to be not quite everyone in the geography, but fairly close).

So I’d love for some groups like yours (or @ConnectedByData?) to help us muddle through the self-driving car mess—and thereby also perhaps be a high-profile model for others.

@rachelcoldicutt I’d be curious what you think this might look like for San Francisco (or any other major city, like London) as it deals with self-driving cars. It in some ways seems like an ideal testbed for community power in AI governance—the issue is very visible (and relatively comprehensible) to the general public, the city (through the police power) has actual control in a way it often doesn’t with SaaS, etc. But suffice to say that the current discussion is… a mess.

Welp, @linuxfoundation saying it out loud: CRA as currently drafted means we will likely see "not for use in the EU" notices on open source code.
My own sense is that this is (1) reasonable and (2) consistent with traditional notions of open source, which has allowed withdrawal of code where legal burdens (historically patents) creates risks for the authors. But convincing people about that parallel is going to be hard.
