(he/him) Aging tech nerd, living in Silicon Valley. I'm an avid hiker and geocacher.

I've recently retired after 30+ years working in electronic design automation. After retiring last year and doing the training, my new part-time gig is as a park docent at Big Basin Redwoods. You might find me at the visitor center or on the trails.

@jschauma Yes, but the reason why the latest LLMs are a concern is that with the latest models, someone can type something as simple as "find a security bug in this program", and if they spend enough on tokens and consume vast amounts of power, they can get a result, and the bug-finding ability of these models has recently gotten much better. It isn't that Mythos is special; their competitors are also getting better and the open weights models aren't far behind.

@Gargron This would appear to mean that if the US sanctions someone (say, for the offense of being an official of the International Criminal Court investigating crimes in Palestine) that person becomes a non-person in Germany, if Apple and Google are ordered to refuse their business?

@SK53 @gedankenstuecke In the US there are three main companies that have an actual physical cellular network, and many smaller players who license bandwidth from one of the majors. So yes, the billing company can be different. But if you have T Mobile or one of the many cheaper companies that use their network, that Verizon tower next to you does you no good.

@gedankenstuecke This will often be carrier dependent. In the US, for example, Verizon and AT&T often have good signal on rural ridge lines while T Mobile does not, and sometimes only one of the three will have a signal. I don't know if it is feasible to include all those details on OSM. I suppose all of the cell towers could be mapped, if that info is available, so hikers might be able to figure out how to get within range of one.

@mattblaze@federate.social So he knew how to avoid getting caught (at least, for many years) but not how to build a bomb. Probably better for us all than if it were the other way around (if he built a powerful and effective bomb and then was immediately caught).

@mattblaze@federate.social I went and found the pardon proclamation. He pardoned everyone who had been convicted and ordered the DoJ to dismiss with prejudice any pending charges. But it seems only those who had been convicted got a pardon, and only those who had active cases got a dismissal. But IANAL, so maybe the suspect's lawyers will claim otherwise.

@luis_in_brief @mattblaze When I visited the Taj Mahal I was charged more than 10x what the locals were, about $25 which is still a great deal for a bucket list item. But while tourists in India are far more wealthy than locals, that isn't the case in the US. And is this per person or per vehicle? If it is per person, do the rangers have to verify each person's citizenship? If you think the lines to get into Yosemite in summer are bad now ...

@mattblaze@federate.social Yes, dementia patients will lose their inhibition and say awful things at inappropriate times. Add in the narcissism and it is probably more likely. He thinks he can do and say anything now.

@ryanliu The attraction of Mastodon for me is that it does not have these kinds of features (some opaque algorithm deciding which posts I see, and any use of an LLM will produce an opaque algorithm). But I wouldn't care if there were a robot that uses an algorithm to boost posts, because people would be free to follow the robot or not. That would seem more in keeping with the way things are done here.
