Call for freelance researchers!
I'm looking freelance researchers to support with a literature search on the impacts of AI adoption, looking at worker safety, infrastructure resilience, and environmental safety
https://www.careful.industries/blog/2025-9-freelance-researchers-safe-adoption-of-ai
Fairly fast turnaround due to a slightly delayed project start, but should be super interesting for people already working in this area.

I'm running another Ofcom Q&A for people who run small, low-risk sites in the UK, who want to know more about compliance with the Online Safety Act https://buttondown.com/indie-and-community-web-compliance-/archive/7-ofcom-virtual-qa-event-23-october/ - send your questions in by 15 October

And 85+% wanted an org that:
📌 puts forward an informed, professional perspective on critical tech issues
📌champions a progressive vision and galvanises action around socially and environmentally positive uses of technology
📌engages with government policies and consultations

📌 75% feel industry leaders don't represent their views
📌 Only 15% feel confident raising concerns about the social, political and environmental impacts of technologies
📌 90% feel the UK would benefit from an orgfor socially progressive technologists

Just sent the first email to the Society for Hopeful Technologists mailing list, with results of our survey. We had 522 respondents from across the UK, working in the field of public interest tech.

If you also think a UK DOGE is a bad idea, Sycamore Collective (a small group I'm a part of) are hosting an in-person Chatham House rules event in London on 18 June, supported by CAMRI. The aim is to identify risks and mitigations and identify some collective next steps https://lu.ma/faby2ga4?tk=p4s5AF - a very few spaces left

If you're concerned about what a UK DOGE would look like, you're not alone.
Sycamore Collective is organising a small, Chatham House rules event, hosted by CAMRI (University of Westminster), on 18 June in central London to explore options for pro-democracy future proofing.
We're asking people to "apply to attend" because we know there could be sensitivities for some attendees, and the aim is to make this a safe space for everyone who takes part.

Popping back to re-up this survey for UK-based technologists and technologish folk. Do you think there's a gap for a professional body to represent and build the field of socially liberal, progressive technologists? Survey open till 21 May https://www.careful.industries/blog/2025-4-survey-society-for-hopeful-technologists

274 responses since the survey opened on Monday. We're being as open and consultative as possible to make sure that whatever this is meets a genuine need and doesn't duplicate existing efforts, so even if you're a bit sceptical would be great to get your thoughts :-)

Good morning! A reminder that the survey to help design the Society for Hopeful Technologists is open for responses. If you're a UK-based technologist who's had enough of extractive platform capitalism and wants to act in solidarity to build something better, please fill it in and share with others https://www.careful.industries/blog/2025-4-survey-society-for-hopeful-technologists

First in a series of posts from me and the Careful Trouble
team on the importance of community power in AI governance. This one is for the funders: why AI governance needs community infrastructure (and not just in the US)

Oh no! I just noticed a typo "ours" here; I copy and pasted from Twitter, so sorry about that, didn't mean to imply I had anything to do with this beyond thinking it's great!
