This feels like a bog standard "graybeard on the Fediverse" take, but I think it's worthy of repetition:

Many people, especially in tech, naively assume that automating things is inherently virtuous.

But automating bad things is bad, and it's often bad to automate good things too.

Can anyone recommend a good LoRa device to use with #Meshtastic if I want to buy, like 10 of them (to give to friends, use at events, keep in my car "just in case")?

I guess now that the tarrifs are struck down it's a good time to move on this.

Anyway let me take a break from complaining about complexity. I dug into the Willow protocol a bit after seeing the terrific video from @gwil@post.lurk.org: https://worm-blossom.org/#y2026w6

The protocol seems... pretty simple for what it does? This is not a complaint! Maybe I'm overestimating my understanding but the data model feels straightforward and the things you can do with it are powerful.

There IS great stuff going on in software these days but you have to know where to look.

Vibe check: is software getting worse? Or does it just feel like it's getting worse because more things depend on software (which has always been bad), and my exposure to software-being-bad has simply increased?

This particular post is prompted by a notification that the door code system at my child's preschool is glitching out, letting some parents in but not others. But this has been on my mind for some time.

Another example: the amount of times I find myself rebooting something just to get it working again is on an upswing, after reaching a local minimum several years ago.

Today's idiosyncratic opinion: I like physical calendars that start the week on Sunday (because they're what I'm used to), but Monday should be the first day of the week on digital calendars and week numbering systems.

There's tremendous value to being a strict LLM Abstentionist in the current political climate, whether or not there are any "valid use cases for LLMs" (there are—not nearly as many as most people think, but sure, more than zero) or the LLM was "created ethically" (to my knowledge no such model exists, but yeah, it's technically possible that someone has or will eventually build one).

Tech workers especially who refuse to interact with this technology are telling their coworkers and employers that ethics and morality are more important to some people than convenience and profit. This is a bold stance to take during good times—and downright foolhardy in the current job market—but the more people who draw the line here, the better the outcomes will be for literally everybody on the whole planet (except, perhaps, for some billionaire investors).

Is anybody aware of a good guide on using distributed Git workflows? 🔄

I feel like I just barely have my head around Git well enough to work effectively with other people and no single central repository, but I would love to have something to point other people to—so that I could actually collaborate with them this way.

Python: There should be one-- and preferably only one --obvious way to do it.

Pandas: Here are three different ways to select a column from a data frame. None of them are called "select".

I made a color scheme for Neovim and I've been using it for a couple weeks. I feel like it needs a lot of polish to actually share, but it's good enough for me to use, and it's (AFAIK) the only editor theme that does everything that I want.

And this is a small, silly thing. But just having this piece of autonomy in my life is so gratifying. I spend all day looking at a code editor, and I am the one who gets to decide exactly how it looks.

I'm going to take the opportunity of Adobe's reprieve for Animate to say: if your career depends on software that you have to rent, start investing in something else RIGHT NOW. You're only safe if a program is open source or a one-time purchase that doesn't require internet connectivity. When you "subscribe" to software, it can become too expensive, lose specific features you need, or be killed outright. At least one of these things will definitely happen, eventually—probably before you retire.

I want to get this out there now, before Adobe comes back and finally kills Animate in a couple years. I won't be a grumpy old scold saying "I told you so", so I promise that this will be the last thing I say about this.

Just been concerned about blithely being told I'd be falling into economic ruin within 30 days. Everything's fine now though. This is an exceptional outcome for my needs. I would not have been alone
