Please share any knowledge or experience that you have on packet inspection using smartphones. I would like to sniff at my switch, which is switching between my (two LANs)^[I put “two LANs” within parentheses to denote that the two LANs are not being switched between.] and my ISP. For this, I have mirrored all ports that are in use to a port that is currently not in use. Can I simply buy one of those USB-C to Ethernet dongles and use tcpdump in Termux? Will Android recognize the dongle as a sniffable network interface? The phone is rooted.

I’ve been gaming with Steam on Arch without issues for a few years now, occasionally applying some popular Steam command tweaks as can be seen on protondb. My question is rather, after a days consideration, could I achieve the same gaming experience with another init system than systemd, such as Artix or Gentoo, provided I install all the other dependencies for Steam and drivers for nvidia. 🤔

Gentoo or LFS?

I have been using Arch for five years and I think I would like to call myself at least a progressive beginner when it comes to Linux, computers and networking, to be humble. 🤣 I would like to “move on” to Gentoo or LFS to force myself to learn more^[This was my main incentive for switching to Arch a long time ago, and it worked!]. Please share your pros and cons for switching to any one of these approaches. Use case: a gaming rig (using nvidia’s proprietary drivers and an AMD CPU) on one system and a server on a separate system.

My guess is that there definitely could be some sort of underground market for them, but as I understand the legislation, using them would be illegal.

But then again, if one really requires privacy, telephones and SMS are some of the worst options for communication. In the current state of things, I’d simply use an end to end encrypted chat app, preferably one that implements the Signal protocol.

[Shitpost] Nooo... Lost my last unregistered SIM-card 😢

I had one SIM-card left that had been “grandfathered” into the current system, in which you are required by law to have the card registered with your social security number. Because Gestapo, that’s why. Anyway, I was keeping it hidden away in my wireless earbuds’ case, taped under the lid, but it must’ve gotten loose. Ah well… I wasn’t really using it for anything, keeping it around just in case.

I'm using a separate little laptop to chat, in this case, with Signal. It's a little inconvenient, but on the other hand, if you don't have multiple monitors, you are at least free from chat notifications in your gaming screen/window. :) Yet another though, if you have an Android phone, just plug in a keyboard and use the phone for chat. :D

Thanks! I just installed OBS - also trying out a few variants from the AUR - but it gave an error saying “couldn’t load frontend-tools plugin”, didn’t recognize/pick up the Steam and/or the game’s window, even though I tried the game in various screen modes, and WHIP wasn’t in the streaming servers/sources selection section. I did some limited troubleshooting, but gave up, because my friend says they have Steam too. We’ll try out Steam’s “native” broadcasting function later tonight and see if we’re satisfied with that + chat/voice chat through Signal. Thanks for your time and input! :)

Alternatives to Discord and Twitch

Given the recent controversies surrounding Discord and the fact that the end user is a product of Twitch, I wonder if there is any “bare bone” solution to stream my gaming session to a friend who’s on Windows. I’d rather that they didn’t have to do anything except clicking on a link or perhaps installing a piece of software but with no need to do any configuration. From their perspective, it should "just work. Should I set up a webserver into which I feed an OBIS stream? Or can perhaps ffmpeg work as a server on it’s own? I’m on Arch Linux, playing games on Steam, within dwm within X11.

This is a shoutout to the app QuickTiles and the developer and contributors thereof.

While at first glance it may not seem like a privacy focused app, however, ultimately, improving digital privacy is more often than not a balance between convenience/ease of use and, well, privacy^[There will always be know-it-alls and above-it-alls in the privacy community who trashtalk normies and/or beginners, acting like this and that is never a tradeoff. If you happen to be one of those, think about whether your attitude helps or hampers our efforts.]

I was almost about to let out a big sigh, thinking do I have to learn kotlin and java for this…? and then I found this app. It has some neat “add-ons” for the quick tiles panel on Android systems. Personally, I was looking for a quick setting to enable/disable data saver. This app had a “data usage” tile, which reduces the amount of requires “clicks” from 5 to 2.
