@xeno Yes, I checked already, Fe/Si/Fe seems ohmic, maybe with a _slight_ nonlinearity - but not nearly as pronounced as Fe/Al/Si/Fe above. But it's difficult to get a low resistance path to measure that well right now...

Did we just made a Schottky diode?
Al on n-doped Si. Random Fe contacts to Al and Si to measure. Positive lead to Si, negative to Al.
X = V (2V per division)
Y = I (100mA per 1V, so 5mA per division.)
(the I/V curve is a composite image of two waveforms)
Si has its protective oxide layer forcefully removed using abrasive methods (ie. sandpaper [!] - still working on being able to handle HF safely).
Not sure if it matters, but the Al is thermally evaporated aluminum foil from EDEKA.

First machine from our Big Haul on the healing bench! This us an Edwards E306A thermal evaporator. We are its third but really second owner - the previous folks just kept it in a corner gathering dust.
Its cooling circuit is leaking, it's missing a pump exhaust filter/conduit, and its film thickness monitor seems to have been violently ripped out at some point.
But the roughing pump runs and it seems to be pulling _a_ vacuum... So there's potential!

On a more serious note: We're currently working on an interferometer for measuring the nanometer-scale displacement by the piezo stack actuators of our scanning tunneling microscope (STM).
To do this without budget, we started working on a 3d-printed system of optomechanics, all designed with @FreeCAD. It works surprisingly well! We'll publish the designs soon, including measurements of their stability performance.
