New measuring node installed off Boknis Eck

🌊 Since 1957, data on the state of the Baltic Sea has been collected regularly from a ship and, since 2016, also from an underwater observatory on the seabed.

🚢 This week, GEOMAR deployed a new, modernised measuring node with the research vessel ALKOR. The old device disappeared in 2019 and has not yet been found.

The EU project MMinE-SwEEPER has been launched at GEOMAR. Led by Professor Dr Jens Greinert, the project will bring together 20 international partners to develop innovative and safe strategies for removing unexploded ordnance from the sea.

With a budget of almost six million euros, MMinE-SwEEPER will work over the next three and a half years to develop solutions to this urgent environmental problem in European waters.

Professor Dr Susanne Neuer, renowned marine biogeochemist and professor at Arizona State University, was today awarded the 31st Excellence Professorship from the Prof. Dr Werner Petersen Foundation. The award ceremony took place #GEOMAR.

🦠In her keynote lecture, Susanne Neuer highlighted how #phytoplankton and bacteria contribute to the global carbon cycle through the biological carbon pump.

Humboldt Fellow Dr Yuanxu Dong enriches Chemical Oceanography at GEOMAR 🌊

The @HumboldtStiftung@wisskomm.social promotes scientific collaboration between foreign and German researchers. This year, the #GEOMAR welcomed a new fellow: Dr. Yuanxu Dong will be hosted by Dr Christa Marandino in the Chemical Oceanography research unit for two years.

Danish Royal Couple Visits GEOMAR 🌊

Today, Their Majesties King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark visited GEOMAR. During their journey across the Kiel Fjord by electric ferry from the western shore to GEOMAR's campus on the eastern shore, Director Professor Dr Katja Matthes, provided insights into current research projects focused on the protection and sustainable use of the Baltic Sea.

State Government, GEOMAR and Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Industry and Commerce establish MUNIMAR competence centre.

The Ministry for Energy Transition, Climate Protection, Environment and Nature (MEKUN), GEOMAR and the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) have concluded a cooperation agreement to further advance the clearance of UXO in the North Sea and Baltic Sea with the help of a joint competence centre.

A group of 30 leading ocean scientists is calling for a radical redefinition of the concept of “sustainable fishing”. In their study, they present eleven “Golden Rules” designed to initiate a global rethink in fisheries policy and practice. Dr Rainer Froese, a fisheries expert from GEOMAR, was involved in the study.

This week, a workshop of the project EMS FORE (Eastern Mediterranean Sea as a model for Future Ocean Research) is taking place at GEOMAR. The project is a partnership between GEOMAR and the University of Haifa, Israel. The workshop offers postdocs and doctoral students from Israel and Germany the opportunity to network.

Fisheries Research Overestimates Fish Stocks: A new study by four Australian research institutions reveals that even these scientific recommendations were often too optimistic. The result? Far more global fish stocks are overfished or have collapsed than we thought.

High-ranking visitor from Cabo Verde! Yesterday the Minister of Communities H.E. Eng. Jorge Santos of the Republic #CaboVerde was a guest at GEOMAR. The Minister was accompanied by the Ambassador of Cabo Verde in Germany, H.E. Emanuel Henrique Semedo Duarte.

With Professor Dr. Katja Matthes and Administrative Director Frank Spiekermann they talked about the cooperation between #GEOMAR and the research institutions of Cabo Verde.
