I use a VPN and/or Tor to do the majority of my websurfing/streaming/torrenting. Some can (notably web browsers*) read your local system time to access your timezone. And, I happen to live in… let’s j

No, don’t do that. Some browsers check if your timezone is in check and if not then they refuse to load HTTPS webpages.

But if you’re setting the time to UTC and your time zone to UTC, your time is still accurate. I assumed that was what OP was talking about doing, not just “leave the time as my time but change the time zone.”

Oh I don’t either, just a perfectly fitting meme. Especially when you look at it from the angle of “replacing things that already work” and “rewriting everything in it.”

They’re not "/24 addresses, it’s a mask. /32 references one specific host, it is a mask of all 1s. /24 references 255 hosts, it is a mask of 75% 1s and 25% 0s. www.geeksforgeeks.org/…/role-of-subnet-mask/

Simple external link blocking extension

I don’t know if it’s just me - I go to great lengths to keep my fedi activity separate from my other internet activity, and I get REALLY mad when I’m browsing Lemmy, click something that I assume will take me to a local discussion, and it opens some random external site - often one I’ve never even heard of - and now who knows what that site is doing, trying to do, cookies, etc., trying to link me and my referrer to my other activity (I do all my fedi stuff by VPN too, so it wouldn’t be by IP, but, they have ways) etc. etc. As I couldn’t find anything already available, I finally got off my butt and just made something to prevent it. These files can be dumped in a local folder, and then under Chrome/Opera/anything-Chromium extensions, you can ‘enable developer options’, and then ‘load unpacked’. It’s SUPER simple, and works, you just need to customize your instance hostname. I thought it might be something at least one other person in this community has thought about and fought with, so I figured I’d share it here! background.js - empty file, but required content.js - // Check if the current page is on lemmy.ml if (window.location.hostname === 'lemmy.ml') { document.querySelectorAll('a').forEach(link => { link.addEventListener('click', (event) => { const href = link.href; const currentDomain = window.location.hostname; // Check if the clicked link is not on the current domain if (new URL(href).hostname !== currentDomain) { event.preventDefault(); // Prevent default navigation const confirmation = confirm("You are about to leave lemmy.ml. Do you want to continue?"); if (confirmation) { window.open(href, '_blank'); // Open in a new tab } } }); }); } manifest.json - { "manifest_version": 3, "name": "Block External Links", "version": "1.0", "permissions": [ "tabs", "activeTab" ], "background": { "service_worker": "background.js" }, "content_scripts": [ { "matches": [""], "js": ["content.js"] } ] } Hope this is useful to someone!!

Conservative/right-wing views have absolutely nothing to do with it in my books. This is a smaller community with seemingly slightly more accountability, or at a minimum, decency and respect for our fellow humans and internet citizens. The majority of the animals on reddit because like 10 year olds in a COD lobby - hiding behind internet anonymity to act like complete assholes, and be as rude and disrespectful as they possibly can, because they believe there will be no consequences. When I see someone behaving like that, seemingly unable to carry on a civil conversation, I do not hesitate to suggest that they go back to Reddit if they’re going to behave like those people. We do NOT want this community to devolve to that level. It is not a serious suggestion that they return there - it’s more so an invitation to examine their behavior, and maybe take a step back, and look at this community overall vs. that community overall, and give some consideration to maybe behaving like a mature adult instead. Spelling it out that way when dealing with those kinds of people typically just encourages them to double down though, so it gets wrapped up in that little retort instead.

To me it’s unexpected as I wasn’t following this all that closely. I was following closely - checking for updates weekly or more, while struggling to be so much as content with my P9FP and trying to decide whether to upgrade to a P10FP (marginal upgrades on paper, but they really help out in the weakest areas). Still entirely unexpected to me, and even in my wildest hypotheticals, Motorola was not on my radar.

I’ve got the robot vacuum of Theseus here… early, 2nd or 3rd gen Roomba I guess it is, I’ve probably had since 2009 or so I think. I’ve replaced damn near all of it, and I’m ALWAYS shocked when something new breaks, I check online, and I can get a part and replace it! And often times the replacement ends up being an upgrade too. I think it must have come from the Twilight Zone or something, I don’t know.

This. I know ‘nicotine’ is already here, but it’s not the same. Confused the hell out of me when I was trying to switch to vaping that I’d keep going back to cigarettes - “I’M GETTING THE NICOTINE, WHAT THE HELL?!”, and it wasn’t just habit, it was overwhelming need to smoke. I finally figured some of those other 2999 or whatever chemicals in there must be addictive too, or something, I don’t know. I’ve quit drinking, when I was a daily drinker at risk of a seizure because my body had grown so chemically dependent on it. I’ve quit countless other ‘behavioral’ addictions. NOTHING, was as hard as trying to quit smoking. Until, thank the powers that be, I met vaping, and after a couple months of back and forth, was able to transition to it entirely. Haven’t had a cigarette since, and it’s been at least 10-11 years. Eventually lowered my nicotine to 0 mg, then gave up the vaping. Haven’t done either since. That was, probably 8-9 years ago now. I still get the odd craving to vape. Zero cravings to smoke up until last year, first trip in my life to Vegas (and two more since). The casino environment with everyone smoking, I don’t know what it is. I look at it with the rose coloured glasses occasionally while there - but then quickly remember how hard it was to shake, and how happy I am without it.

I did it my whole life (~mid forties now). I met and was talking to a guy about 10-15 years ago, and it came up - he said “oh yeah, I used to do that, I just stopped.” Now, consider that, we’re both addicts and met at a 12-step meeting. I’m like “You can’t just stop guy, lawl, wtf?” But he insisted - “No, really, I just stopped.” So I tried … and was absolutely, completely fucking stunned - it worked - I just stopped.

You’ve got to taper. I’ve had hangovers after multi-week benders that didn’t hurt as bad as trying to drop caffeine cold turkey. I know tapering is counter intuitive and counter productive for a lot of addictions, but for caffeine it’s a must.
