I am a hobbyist security researcher, filterlist maintainer, and wannabe law nerd. I help maintain the Actually Legitimate URL Shortener Tool. I post about a variety of topics including cybersecurity, content filtering, law, tech, and trans rights. This is also the best place to find updates on my filterlists, as I often post about bugs and improvements to them.
I am not an expert; do not take anything I toot as truth. Retoot/like != agreement. Not legal/medical advice.

Profile picture: truncated screenshot of a WINE error message. The error message is titled "Download failed". The message reads "Download Failed: Success. Check your connection and click 'Retry' to try downloading the files again, or click 'Next' to continue installing anyway." There is only one button labeled "OK".

Header image: A Windows error message against the default Windows wallpaper. The error message reads "Windows cannot find iam-py-test. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."

If I made an LLM, I would also claim it is so good I can't give it to the general public.
It's a great way to hype up your product while also making yourself look reasonable and caring.

Putting aside the legal and free speech questions, how can you call yourself a care facility if you put your personal politics above the health and rights of your patients. They are suing in order to have the ability to harm their patients. Does that not go against medical ethics?

Members of the military: Now is a great time to talk to a lawyer about how to respond if you get an order you believe to be unlawful.

Don't wait until you get an unlawful order.

Trump's war crimes are at best delayed.

Trump says he will suspend the bombing of Iran for two weeks, claiming he has gotten a ceasefire. I await independent confirmation of the existence of such a ceasefire, as Trump's word isn't worth the pixels it's printed on.

Continuing my thread on trying to convince my government to not do war crimes:

Called Treasury. My first attempt resulted in me getting in the wrong submenu, then they just cut me off. Pressing 7 then 1 (Treasury direct) resulted in it failing to go through.

In a matter of hours, at the direction of US President Donald Trump, the US Military will launch attacks on civilian infrastructure in Iran.
These attacks are unethical and likely unlawful.

I urge President Trump not to go through with this attack.
I also urge all service members to speak to an attorney immediately about if they can disobey this order.

@veit Worse, LinkedIn randomly locks out accounts and requires the owner to provide ID in order to unlock it (and "prove they are human"). Citation: It happened to my account. Edit: here is LinkedIn's documentation https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a1342692 It also uses Persona. Other options to verify are filing an affidavit and using a work email address, so providing ID isn't the only option. But not everyone has a work email setup. Moreover, I don't know how they handle the account name not being a person's legal name (e.g. trans people in states which don't let them change their name).

From @nateb@mastodon.thenewoil.org

A lawsuit filed in the Northern District of California on 31 March alleges Perplexity shared its users' chat logs with Meta and Google, and three of which are listed as defendants. The lawsuit also alleges Perplexity offered an "incognito" mode which in reality provided no extra protection.

I can't find the docket on Court Listener (yet), but here is the complaint from Ars Technica: https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Doe-v-Perplexity-Complaint-3-31-26.pdf

And here is their reporting: https://web.archive.org/web/https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/04/perplexitys-incognito-mode-is-a-sham-lawsuit-says/

I can not comment on the legal or factual merits of the case.

The clipped NASA Artemis II stream shared above is currently still live, and you can watch it in full here. As it is live, there is no transcript provided on the video page. So I asked Google's Gemini to find the portion of the livestream where Outlook bugs were discussed. Google confirmed the quote from Grayson’s clip. It credited Commander Reid Wiseman talking to Mission Control in Houston at this time. “I also see that I have two Microsoft Outlooks, and neither one of those are working if you want to remote in,” said Wiseman at around 13 and a quarter hours into the livestream. Houston agreed to remote in to take a look at the issue. This is the state of journalism right now. Just unquestionably repeating the output of LLMs. https://www.tomshardware.com/software/microsoft-office/artemis-ii-astronaut-finds-two-outlook-instances-running-on-computers-call-on-houston-to-fix-microsoft-anomaly-puzzled-caller-describes-two-outlooks-and-neither-one-of-those-are-working

CloudFlare has designated archive.today as a "Command and Control & Botnet", blocking it for their 1.1.1.2 DNS server, which markets itself as blocking known malicious domains.
It is not blocked on the unfiltered 1.1.1.1.

https://radar.cloudflare.com/domains/domain/archive.today

Confirmed with my DNS checker tool:

Cloudflare (1.1.1.1): 188.43.20.67
Cloudflare (malware) (1.1.1.2): Blocked
Cloudflare (malware/porn) (1.1.1.3): Blocked

In the middle of a very important OSINT investigation (not AT), LinkedIn decided to lock me out of my account and require me to provide government ID to continue.
I made a new alt account (which wanted a phone number but not an ID), but this means I no longer have access to my "official" iam-py-test LinkedIn account which I was using to contact someone for archive.today-related stuff.
The OG alt account was obviously under a fake name, so providing ID wouldn't have helped anyway, unless they don't actually validate the ID and just want it for kicks and giggles.

Requiring government ID to verify an account sounds great in theory, I guess. Or I guess it sounded good in theory to LinkedIn, since I don't think it sounds good even in theory. It also sounds like a good idea to most governments, so I guess I'm in the minority here.

Anyway, in practice processing tons of very sensitive IDs means a security breach is inevitable, and it locks out anyone who doesn't have a valid ID or whose legal name doesn't match the name they go by in professional situations.

And no, submitting an ID to a social media site isn't the same as showing an ID at a store.
Its like giving your ID to the checkout person, letting them go back to make a photocopy of it, and then mailing a photocopy of the photocopy to corporate headquarters alongside a list of everything you purchased and a picture of you taken with an electron microscope.

A Tennessee bill would require medical providers of gender affirming care to submit detailed information about their patients. While these reports can not contain explicit identifying information, this detailed information includes the age, assigned sex at birth, and county of residence for the patient. It also would include information about the medical treatments they are receiving, and the identity of their physician.
This information is detailed enough to identify the patient.

The bill also requires providers to publish yearly statistical reports, though I am not sure what specific information these reports would contain.

TLDR; it is not a public registry of trans people in Tennessee, but it still raises serious privacy issues.
Its also seemingly a solution in search of a problem, since I'm not sure of a single valid reason for this detailed information to be submitted to the government.
The way the bill is written, and the language used within, makes clear the transphobic intent of the authors.

What could possibly go wrong?

Also, how hard really is it to write a dating profile? Do you really need an AI to tell you what you are interested in?
Also, are your photos really a good reference for what you are interested in? I know my photos don't accurately represent my interests.

Useless privacy invasion preying on lonely people.

@AT1ST That I don't have an answer to. If this was a subpoena to a US company subpoenaed under US law, they could challenge it in US court but it will be an uphill battle. I have no idea how Proton could challenge the subpoena under Swiss law, and my guess is they wouldn't be able to challenge it under US law, but I am not a lawyer and I really don't know.

@AT1ST Depends what remedies exist under both the MLAT and Swiss law. I'm not sure if they could challenge in US court, Swiss court, or both. In US court, companies can move to quash a subpoena, but if a magistrate judge found probable cause, that would probably be a difficult battle. Not to mention the grounds for quashing a subpoena in the first place are very limited, and I don't think that any remedy is even available here but am not an expert (https://www.law.cornell.edu/rules/frcp/rule_45) Once the case gets the court - and it doesn't seem it ever did here - there could be motions to suppress the evidence on the grounds it was illegally obtained. That seems unlikely to prevail here, especially given that analysis would probably be under US law, not Swiss law. There could also be other challenges to the case, i.e. first amendment challenges, but without knowing the facts its hard to know how successful those challenges would be. All of that is so far down the road that it wouldn't be in Proton's calculus. I am not a lawyer, take everything I said with a lot of skepticism.

@jnk Wouldn't it still need to fly the flag of some country, and be under that country's legal jurisdiction? If I recall correctly ships which don't fly the flag of any jurisdiction, or fly the flag of a country they aren't registered in, exist in legally ambiguous territory where some of the normal protections afforded to vessels might not apply.

@ChristineMalec I have seen some people who intentionally write bad alt text just to mess with AI. I don't know if they are misinformed or just don't care (to put it politely).

Just adding something I noticed: these grants and contract are part of DHS' Long Range Broad Agency Announcement (LRBAA) program: The Science and Technology Directorate's (S&T) Long Range Broad Agency Announcement (LRBAA) is a standing, open invitation to the scientific and technical communities to fund pioneering research and development (R&D) projects in support of our nation’s security. https://www.dhs.gov/science-and-technology/st-lrbaa That doesn't answer your question, though.
