Good morning from Glacier Bay

So anyway, this is a big part of why, despite its flaws, I play cities skylines 2, not 1.

I've just learned there's a mod to export cities skylines 2 maps to open street maps, and I'm going to become so insufferable

"AI can make mistakes, always check the results"

I fucking loathe this phrase and everything that goes into it. It's not advice. It's a threat.

You probably read it as "AI is _capable_ of making mistakes; you _should_ check the results".

What it actually says is "AI is _permitted_ to make mistakes; _you are liable_ for the results, whether you check them or not".

Except "you" is generally not even the person building, installing, or even using the AI. It's the person the AI is used on:

We all know that protonmail is a business, right? Like, they have staff, and assets, and they're subject to laws in at least the jurisdictions where they do business. We all know that, right?

If a court in one of those jurisdictions orders them to hand over some information, they have no choice but to do so. They might choose to fight that order, but even that is way beyond what you can expect from them. And if the court doesn't change it's mind, they still have no choice but to comply. The other option is a crime, and there's absolutely no way they're going to commit crimes to protect their $5/mo customers.

I'm not sure what anyone wants from them, in this case. What do you think they should have done differently?

I mean, if we want them to do more, the kind of thing we can reasonably ask of them is to advocate for their country to diplomaticlly protect them and the rest of their citizens from the US government.

Incidentally, if you divert a trillion dollars to something and get "basically zero" economic activity around it, that's not an investment. It's sabotage. It's become the chief manifestation of the capital strike we've all been enduring since, roughly, the first half of 2022.

RE: @jenniferplusplus@hachyderm.io

There's a very realistic future where small towns scattered all around the USA (and other places, but there's gonna be a shit ton of it here) will find themselves stuck with half built or buit-but-empty datacenters when this bubble bursts.

I think those cities should seize them from the bankrupt shell companies that will eventually own them on paper, and operate them as public utilities. Ideally, as part of or alongside public broadband utilities.

Since github sucks and I want it to play a smaller and less important role in my life and the world, I have cancelled my github sponsorship of hachyderm. Now I'm contributing through opencollective, instead.

Just food for thought

It sounds like discord is trying to assure us that most people won't have to hand over our IDs to them because they've already been doing digital phrenology on us, so we should all just calm down.

Strangely, I find this even more motivating to leave

On one hand, hugops to the actual human beings carrying pagers at github today. On the other hand, fuck github the corporate entity.

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@jenniferplusplus/115993756338334694 I firmly believe that a great deal of the reason that text synthesizer bots are so readily and widely accepted by software developers is that, as a field, we are complete amateur users of our own tools. We have syntactically aware code completion; 1 button jump to definitions and usages for virtually any entity; automatic refactoring; templated code generation; all manner of static analysis; step through break point debuggers; and on and on. And still a huge and vocal cohort take pride in personally using the most bare bones tools they can find, and refuse to understand or maintain the shared CI system where many of those things are automated. They literally don't know that these tools exist, or how to use them. And they resent the notion that they should. The chatbot, on the other hand, is a cli—their most venerated mode of interaction. And it does something that resembles many of those other things. It must seem like magic to the people who don't think it's a clown shoes imitation of proper tools.

"AI" is not actually a technology, in the way people would commonly understand that term. If you're feeling extremely generous, you could say that AI is a marketing term for a loose and shifting bundle of technologies that have specific useful applications. I am not feeling so generous. AI is a technocratic political project for the purpose of industrializing knowledge work. The details of how it works are a distant secondary concern to the effect it has, which is to enclose and capture all knowledge work and make it dependent on capital.

Reminder that AI is "propping up" the economy the same way a tape worm props up your metabolism.

It has completely choked off all capital investment to any other activity for years. It completely devours resources needed by any other endeavor. And for all that, it produces practically nothing that people want or need. It's strangling the economy.
