@cstross@wandering.shop @davidgerard@circumstances.run It seems that everybody lost the way horribly in the last 12~15 years – while Windows wasn't ever terribly consistent with itself, at least everything worked, and I could navigate everywhere with just keyboard. Nowadays they seem to go out of their way to force you to use the mouse, including things that absolutely should let you use a keyboard.

@cstross@wandering.shop @foone@digipres.club I had something similar when they diagnosed me with autoimmune disorder – 4 daily things (two in the morning, one at midday, one before going to bed), one on Mondays (morning and evening), one on Tuesdays, one on Wednesdays, one on Fridays, one two consecutive days once a month. The schedule and dosing instructions took a third of an A4 page, and I've had several doctors go WTF when they saw that. My biggest problem was when I was when I was getting off Medrol, because I had to take it every other day for two months, and I could never remember if I've taken it that morning already or not.

@cstross@wandering.shop Somebody on Reddit claims to have written a raytracer in Windows batch script, though I couldn't find the code published anywhere (but I do have two examples of a batch file that draws a Mandelbrot fractal).

@mattblaze@federate.social That reminds me of trying to activate a phonebook software from the local Telecom about 20 years ago – it came on a CD, and used a floppy for copy protection, but since laptops at that time already didn't have a floppy drive any more, you could instead call them for activation, which required you to press a secret key combo during install (when it asked for the floppy), then read a long numeric code to the operator, then type in a code that the operator read to you – this code was 21 characters long, contained small and capital letters, numbers, / and + characters and always ended with == (this gives you a clue about how they encoded the secret). At least it wasn't time-limited (at least I hope so), because just typing all of the characters properly always took forever, as their operator never used phonetic alphabet.
