When will Westerners realize that our collective characture of the brainwashed, thought controlled, information controlled, constantly surveiled citizen that we attribute to China/The USSR/etc… IS US?

A Russian is on an airliner heading to the US, and the American in the seat next to him asks, “So what brings you to the US?” The Russian replies, “I’m studying the American approach to propaganda.” The American says, “What propaganda?” The Russian says, “That’s what I mean.”

Like, as far as legal basis? Yes. But if you’re hoping to leverage an LLM… Part of the reason they’re so good at producing replacements for e.g. react is that the source code for react is in the training data, along with test suites and a ton of commentary related to the source code. That’s on top of the basic legibility challenges of decompiled binaries.

Basically, generative AI is killing open source — between slop contributions overwhelming maintainers, and the increasing feasibility of “clean-rooming” open source software to remove any obligations that private companies might otherwise have towards projects they depend on, and models cleaving traffic away from the documentation sites that get people involved.

It’s a lot faster to put in video game footage than it is to get some B-roll from the military and get it declassified. Not that this administration cares about rules tbh.

I do like the modularity of discrete GPUs though. But a cooling setup similar to CPUs would’ve been better for airflow.

Modularity is nice — both for personal preference reasons and incentivizing-market-competition reasons — but it does come at a cost. The thing is: even in our modular world right now, you don’t really have many choices. Two CPU companies, three GPU companies (two of them being the same as the CPU companies)… We could someday have a world where PC hardware is technically less modular than it is today but consumers have more choices in the marketplace than they do today.
