@futurebird used correctly and in the correct subjects, its very impressive and works well. There are, of course, the other ways of using it where it is rubbish. In addition, its incredibly expensive to run. Imagine if cars were all the same as Jaguars in price… then layer in enshittification and understand that currently the Jaguars are marked way down… problem! :(

@cstross@wandering.shop in Agatha Christie’s bio, she describes how when she first got a secretary and starting recording the stories for the secretary to type up, it didn’t immediately go well, as she found she made the noises her characters were making, rather than the more useful descriptions of what they were doing (but iirc she figured it out :) )

@troberts@theblower.au i have both the ddg browser installed on my tablet, and ddg set as the default search engine on safari. I did a search in safari on ddg the other day, then repeated it in the ddg browser… and the results were different and the ddg browser ones much better! Weird! Only a sample of one, though, of course

@frogglin @david my unsupported theory is: nerds are the ones who know about things while geeks are the ones who can do things. So nerds will be able to quote movies, discuss philosophy and other stuff, perhaps we could call it “the Arts”; and geeks can setup your server, write some nice code and develop a theory of relativity - so, science and engineering.
Clearly there will be some overlap, but thats my headcanon :)

@cstross@wandering.shop i do have an alert for when my partner passes a certain shop, being an arbitrary spot that is about a nice distance for knowing hes almost home. If im understanding you correctly, it sounds like thats what you want?
Of course, they have to approve you getting the ping :)
