I've heard it said the American culture is obsessed with youth. But is it good to be a young American?
Predators don't seek young girls because they are more beautiful or more "fertile" (shudder) it's the same as with armies, which do not seek young recruits because they are physically stronger.
Both seek youth because it is easier to shape and control a person in their formative years. It's primarily about control and power.

My husband and some of my students are sensitive to sound and recently there have been so many sirens in NYC. Just nonstop. It's not the police or fire ... it's these ambulances, some of them aren't official but they have highway level sirens and use them on residential streets.
Is there some kind of community org that works to stop noise pollution?
Sirens are designed to penetrate the sound insulation of cars on the highway. But we do not live on a highway. It's too loud.

I know 8 trans people well and many more as acquaintances. The 8 people I know well range from being an old childhood friend, to coworkers, to students, to neighbors.
I'm mostly aware that they are trans at all due to the increase in anti-trans laws and blatant transphobia in the US. Were it not for that? I might not know or even care. I worry about them.
In each case the fact that they are trans is one of the less interesting things I know about them.

Queen ants often dig a hole when they leave to found a new colony. The queen will seal herself away in a little pocket with no entrance or exit until she can lay and raise several eggs. Then the small workers emerge and forage for her.
This is why a queen ant can be kept in a test tube with water and she will be very happy.
These little plastic bubbles are too small and there is no water. But the ants seem to be alive still. Very upsetting.

In a few years my husband wants to go to China. We've been before to the big cities which are amazing but we'd like to go to one of the dozens of cities in China with millions of people most people in the west know very little about.
I'd like to go to see ancient invertebrates. Is there anything to do at the Qingjiang biota? There has to be a university or museum or something there.
My husband speaks Chinese ... poorly, like a 10 year old. Which I think is impressive tbh.

"Ant Garnets" are tiny red gems found by ants. I know this sounds made up ... but it's real.
Harvester ants dig deep nests (up to 6m!) and they bring the soil to the surface grain by grain. Sometimes they find garnets, tiny precious red gemstones.
These are waste to the ants: they end up in the spoil heap around the nest. When it rains, the lighter stone washes away, the garnets from deep in the earth remain.
Those in the know can collect them from the surface.

The average fire ant queen lives 6 to 8 years. This pretty typical for ant queens. Carpenter ant queens live from 10 to 15 years. The little black ants? Lasius niger and neoniger (these are small black ants found in the US, UK, Europe and more) have queens that live for two to three decades.
There may be a thirty year old insect in your yard and she is very busy!

I was a little worried when I didn't see a lot of people talking about how terrible the SOTU (State of the Union) speech by Trump was. Could that mean it was ... OK? Where were all of the "what a disaster" takes?
Of course I didn't watch any of it. It's hard to think of something I'd like to do less. So, I was expecting someone else to just tell me a little about what it was like.
What I'm discovering is that no one watched it. Nobody. (statistically speaking)

I know that there are some people who I will click on a one hour or three hour video for... but if it's just based on "interesting topic" and a peek at how long it is what do you look for?

So I often come back to the question of defining what we mean by "intelligence." It's pretty easy to get disgusted say it's not even worth trying to define because it is a word used in such inconsistent ways.
