@Nettlephagus@mementomori.social Luutarhasta tuli mieleeni, olin pari vuotta sitten sellaisella akateemisella kotimaisella perinnenoituus Suomessa -luennolla, missä kerrottiin, että 1800-luvulla noitaopiskelijan pitäisi viettää kokonainen yö hautuumalla yksin, että kuolleiden sielut voivat tulla välittämään hänen alitajuntaansa noitaoppejaan.
Yötöissä voi siksi käydä hassusti, jos on luutarhuri 🤔

I like this video essay about Heated Rivalry and who is watching it and why, but Mina Le goes on these wonderful tangents about how women see themselves and female characters in media, some of which are profoundly messed up, and I love it because it touches some themes I've discussed recently with a US-based romance novelist on romantic fiction tropes and romantic fiction history, and how wildly different for example Pride and Prejudice is as a satirical comedy, which US made (Aldous Huxley actually wrote the screenplay!) 1940 film version and UK 1995 still capture, when a large part of the 2000s Austen films are drenched in rather cliche romanticisms without much levity at all (which even Persuasion contains, which is most wonderfully adapted in the 1995 version where the entire Musgrove household need family therapy with Anne. I haven't seen the -22 one, but I understand the humour there has no lightness at all, and falls flat with how heavily it is built.)

Every year one must marvel how the days grow brighter as spring approaches. I photographed moss and lichen in daylight at half past eight in the morning on my way to the library. Just a little while ago it would have still been dark when passing by this rock wall in the morning.
Yesterday I was watching a downshifting video on moving to the countryside, and the new cottage owner/renovator said "I've never noticed the seasons shift before" and my understanding is that he's from a town rather than a city.
What I like about Helsinki (which is also a thing the city council planning commission is planning on destroying) is how much space they used to give for trees and little pockets of nature between houses and different areas (now of course everything must be paved over in the name of progress, even though there are whole new empty buildings because no one wants to live in them) - I am appalled by how little nature city planners allow in general in towns and cities all over the world.
But for now, still for a little while, it's possible to observe seasons in my small pocket of the world, by how dry the winter air has left moss on rock, the amount of light on a certain time of day, how bare the branches of the birch tree outside my balcony are. And so on. And so on.

I was thinking about boundaries and LinkedIn.
One day on LinkedIn I saw the same man on my feed twice, once he was complaining when people reject his devil's-advocate comments in their posts, because "you shouldn't be online unless you want to be interacted with" (and that is a very bad take, not far away from lengths of skirt), later that day he was upset that someone had given him a negative comment and he'd had to block them so he wouldn't get "bad comments" that tarnish his profile. That is an interesting interior world view to have.
I've adopted a delete comment approach on LinkedIn. When I write about my professional opinions and insights on a professional platform, having some man twenty years my junior who didn't exist for many years yet before the year I started playing video games, I find engaging in bad faith "discourse" a completely meaningless exercise of wasting time, when ten out of ten times these tend to be thinly veiled attacks on my person. Which is not something I want a potential recruiter to read on my professional profile about my person.
Deleting a comment is less drastic than blocking someone, and you don't need to have a whole conversation about it. Just delete and proceed with your life.
Having boundaries doesn't make you a bad person. It actually gives you more space for yourself physically and mentally, and having that makes you more balanced and self-assured. Calmer. You don't need to take anything online that you wouldn't take on the street in your regular life.

En oikein sinua tuntematta osaa mitään muuta sanoa kuin toivoa, että toivottavasti pystyt kaikesta huolimatta tapaamaan ihmisiä ja käymään ulkona.
Itselleni rajojen asettaminen on ollut tosi hieno kokemus, en väitä että se olisi yleislääke kaikkeen, mutta maailmassa nyt noin ylipäätään on aika paljon rajojen ylittämistä ja nykyajan hektinen ns. Internet-aika ei anna tilaisuuksia prosessoida kaikkea, niin ei ihmekään, että keho ja aistit ylikuormittuu. Kun tekee pitkän prosessin esimerkiksi terapeutin kanssa omien rajojen kehittämisestä, sitä tulee tietoisemmaksi siitä, mikä itselle on sopivaa ja mukavaa, ja vaikeat tilanteetkin ehkä tuntuvat käsiteltävimmiltä sillai, että ne eivät enää mene ihon alle niin pitkäksi aikaa, vaikka saattavat hetkessä sattua.

I'm a writer for hire in games! I'm in Finland.
Here are some player observations about our work for Nine Parchments in the writing team, which I was big kahuna, boss of. These comments are from 2025, while the game was released in 2017.
One of the particular things I did for Nine Parchments was to try and not make our characters cookie-cutter, because I thought it would make the game a rather lackluster experience.
The core of critique during and after development for the characters was the thought that characters should embody the tropes their game design represents, which is a common conservative mindset for character building, but I think it comes from a place of fear, and I don't think narrative design should come from a place of "what if we turn off the players by introducing something new and different in their lives?" because then you're leading with fear, not innovation and creativity.
In any case, no one is ever going to create a cultural artefact that is going to be universally loved. And creating something with personality is going to make you stand apart, which never hindered marketing.

On Valentine's Day I participated in an English Country Dance performance (in Jane Austen film spirit) in a beautiful old wooden villa with seven dances from England and Sweden from the 18th and early 19th centuries.
While the company was great and the event turned out well from the part of logistics and so on, the thing that struck me the most afterwards was how overcome I was and am over the reactions in the audience, how genuinely delighted people were by us, and receiving thank yous afterwards was the best reward (and of course as an amateur performer, probably realistically the best reward you can get x) - knowing you'd made someone's day a little brighter with a little dance.
It was such a lovely afternoon.

I sat in my union’s webinar yesterday evening listening about neurodivergency in work life. A couple of things I kept thinking about:
- I wondered about how sad in a way it is that there was no aspect of history, I think (and have heard from seniors) that before extremely massive media that created illusions on the bounds of normalcy it was more common that people behaved differently, and that was ”the normal”, whereas now it’s a situation of shame, diagnosis, and much more homogenetic work cultures (dang I wish there was more early 20th c working class literature on this for me to read on now) although ofc some things were probably worse, but even further down in history Everyone Was Needed so people just had to get things done with all kinds of people.
- It’s very possible that I sometimes get lost in games for hours because they provide me with cognitive offloading space, and I hadn’t thought of the space or service that kind of experience gives me from a design standpoint before yesterday, prompting me to wonder if these systems are created by designers with similar tendencies, or if this is a coincidence (especially thinking about my Crusader Kings 30 hour marathon over a Christmas holiday in order to rinse work out of my mind which was the most extreme case of it.) (Also there is a line between functional cognitive offloading and then just effing off into fairyland without a second thought.)
- It’s only late capitalistic work life that is hostile to everyone’s brain hygiene with cognitively harmful spaces, routines, practices, etc. It’s hard to be an advocate for good and healthy work practices when The Line Goes Up means saving on mental health.

I was listening to a psychonalyst/philosopher's lecture on good communication, optimal even, and about how everything people should communicate to each other would in the best case be contributing, building something instead of being destructive, thoughtful, nuanced. A little later I wondered about the current age of loss and destruction, and if sharing grief and sorrow can be meaningful, can it contribute in a positive way, can sadness be thoughtful? Can it be nuanced? I want to dwell on this question for a while.

So incredibly sad all the time about the state of the world. Nature and human societal psyche. Grief, grief is an ocean and the water rises every day. Every morning I use art as means to find a higher ground, lest I drown in the dark waters of apathy and lose connection to meaning and my own humanity.
And by afternoon I am ready to scream my rage at the smarmy psychopaths who enjoy all this and relish it visibly.

@cflynnbooks@mastodonapp.uk Thanks, I'm a little worried that my only Windows OS that I can use right now is on that laptop, which is a secondhand purchase, and if I bulldoze it, then I've no Windows anymore (I have this perhaps a little unfounded fear of WHAT IF I NEED WINDOWS all of a sudden - then again, a year ago I had to install MS software on it for the purpose of dealing with a client's infra system for work reasons, but this is a fewer than five years type of occurrence.)
But I do want/need my laptop for writing at the same time. Of course that becomes difficult if I use and OS that decides to one day format my hard drive 🤔

Was thinking about two things: one about how the Epstein files reveal that 4chan is a part of Epstein's cannibal pedophile billionaire influence circle, which made me think that #GamerGate is most likely also a part of the cannibal pedophile billionaire project; and about the recent mass consolidation of video game culture into the hands of VC capitalists; I don't think that games falling into the hands of ultra billionaires is "just business" when you think that all online culture projects in the 2000s seen to be psyops by the most influential people in the world. Something stranger is going on with the 50 000 layoffs.
Anyhooooow I wish us all a very "let's have EU based online payment options that don't stop servicing Queer game designers" and a "how about a new online game store that isn't based in an authoritarian empire that's threatening to invade a new country every week" etc and so on.

Years ago I started thinking that the rich people of the world don't have a homeland in the traditional sense like normal people who live in countries. Billionaires from all over the world live in Billionaire Land; the Elmos and Dubai oil money and rich dictators are all in a club where they play games. When the well-off connected people from Finland's National Coalition meet with GOP or the Heritage Foundation, it's not international diplomacy, it's rich and powerful people meeting in the unmaterial states of the rich and powerful. They have absolutely no sense or obligation for their countries. It's all just games to get more money, more power, more ability to dictate how the future plays out.
And when this week's Epstein files came out it just so clearly illustrated the truth behind me thesis (which curiously was based on observing how international sports people have more community with each other and base their identity on that group, rather than the flag they represent in a competition that you can see in tv in the bottom corner.)
It's also weird how this is not at all a new thing. National states didn't really become a thing before the 19th century, but before that we had capitalists who owned businesses, and for example factory owners in Finland in the early 20th century were horrified with the idea of an independent Finland, because living in a small country meant a smaller market to operate in. If the Björn Wahrooses of this country had their way, Finland would not exist, but would be a part of Germany, or Russia, or maybe even a weird 51st state of the United States (just looking at the performating groveling the government does this is not far fetched.)
But it's interesting that the Epstein gang wants to drive this idea of Tribalism. I want to know what they mean when they talk about how great it is when Brexit happens. It's obvious though that they don't at the same time want the US to fall apart. Is this more about dismantling Democracy, actually, and just setting up techno feudalism? Curious.

I'm trying to find alternatives for #pinterest and all the LLM-creted articles contain gems such as Inkscape being a great alternative for Pinterest, which as we all know, is a vector drawing program. Like Pinterest. 🤔
It's actually sad and upsetting to watch the ability to search the internet just crumble in front your eyes in almost real time. I've had bad answers before and dealt with it, but this query, I honestly can't see myself climbing the mountain of all the unfactual nonsense DDG is giving me this time.
