🌷 Happy Women's Day! Meet Minna Canth. Yes, pronounced almost like that other word. And honestly? Perfect. She gave the patriarchy exactly the kind of energy it deserved since 1844.
Finland's original feminist and playwright, she fought for women's and workers' rights when most people thought a woman's biggest choice was which apron to wear. Her plays were so sharp they made the establishment sweat. She was the first Finnish woman to have her own flag day (March 19th).

With the right expertise and detailed specs, you can achieve great results while keeping the code maintainable and retaining ownership. I really dislike the mindset that everything has to be either absolutely good or 100% bad.

FYI, heads up to my Fedi friends. I've applied for a name change. Instead of Roni Rolle Laukkarinen, I'll be known as Rolle Roni Laukkarinen, with Rolle as my first and calling name. After all, that's what I've been called most of my life. My mom gave me her blessing. I've been thinking about this for years, and now it's finally happening, hopefully as soon as the Digital and Population Data Services Agency of Finland approves it.

Yes, always has been 👍 Some treadmills support it directly, but I personally use a Stryd running pod and a Polar H10 HR strap to get my avatar moving and show my distance, pace, cadence, and heart rate on the screen. That way, an iPhone or Windows PC with any treadmill works just fine. It's so much fun, I've been doing this for years!

Online communities matter. I've always been a bit of a hermit in real life, but being part of online communities makes me feel more complete, even though I rarely meet anyone in person.
I use Zwift to run virtually when the weather is bad or I just don't feel like going outside. I rarely chat while running, but this time I ran with some pro athletes again, and the team leader wanted to send greetings to a buddy fighting cancer. I sent her some Finnish SISU.
Seeing those constant support messages appear right at the 10-minute mark (he asked us to send them all at once for a photo) got me emotional. Such a unique, sweaty run.

What I mean specifically are these endless toggles everywhere. Click-click-click-click. Before it was just a click.
Also, why change the most used hashtags into a horizontal list? And what's with that huge button to show more pinned items? What was wrong with the old setup? The carousel wasn't great either, but I liked the version that showed them one below the other.
What problems are we actually trying to solve here?
I know these aren't shipped yet, but does anyone actually use Figma and discuss UX?

I won't be able to use the flag EXPERIMENTAL_FEATURES=profile_redesign for a while. I do not have time to redesign ours. I really think the Mastodon core team has made some poor choices lately, UX anti-patterns are popping up again. Last time, they changed post visibility under a modal that required up to six clicks and added unnecessary cognitive strain. I even sent a PR suggestion, but they rejected it.
Right now we have "Posts" and "Posts and replies" in tabs, but in the experimental profile redesign there's a "Posts" toggle that contains "Replies" and "Posts" toggles underneath it. It adds extra clicks and combines interface elements under one toggle, which just creates more friction. What's wrong with traditional tabs?
I wish they'd stop breaking what already works well. Honestly, as a long-time front-end developer, I don't understand some of these design choices. Hopefully, these experimental features will mature a bit before they make it to stable.

We've successfully upgraded our Mastodon server to v4.6.0-alpha.4+mementomods-2026-02-21, along with Mastodon Bird UI 4.0.0-alpha.0-4.
This update includes today's latest daily build with 121 new commits from upstream since mementomods-2026-02-08.
What's new in Mastodon core - These are the changes Mastodon Team have introduced us in the latest nightly version we are running:
✨ New features
- Theme system overhaul. This won't affect us and is currently a bit incomplete, because we do not utilize this new color-scheme feature in our themes, yet.
- Lots of fixes and underlying changes
🔮 Upcoming
- Profile redesign and Collections are being built incrementally upstream behind experimental flags, we'll enable them once Mastodon Bird UI support is ready
- FASP (Fediverse Auxiliary Service Providers) infrastructure continues to be developed
🐦⬛ Mastodon Bird UI 4.0.0-alpha.0-4 (nightly)
- Fix translate button color not matching link color
- Fix extra border-left showing up in mobile devices
- Updated install script for new theme infrastructure (idempotent, handles stale theme cleanup)
Mastodon Bird UI 4.0.0-alpha.0-4 is still a work in progress in the nightly branch. It's not 100% ready, but it's stable with today's Mastodon alpha.4.

Wow, there are a lot of breaking changes in the latest Mastodon nightly. I'm a bit surprised by some of the UI choices being made. I haven't been able to refactor all the code in Mastodon Bird UI yet, and I already have quite a bit of technical debt. This won't make my life any easier. I hope I get some breathing room before 4.6.0 is released.

@maijanlainen@mementomori.social Minulla on yleistynyt ahdistuneisuushäiriö ja sosiaalinen ahdistus, joten ei sitä oikein tiedä. Ihan vaan se että joutuu olla muiden silmien alla ja tavata ihmisiä. Ahdistusta on vaikea määritellä. Olen myös joutunut aika monta kertaa pahasti loukatuksi ihmisten toimesta ja ehkä noissa esim. keikkapaikoissa pelottaa, että jos tulee vastaan ihmisiä, joita ei halua tavata ja ei pääse helposti pois. Agorafobiasta myös kärsin.

I built a personal book tracker called Luku. If you want early access, you can join the waitlist at https://luku.app
I'm not planning to open source it for now. Luku is built on Big Tech cloud, but all servers located in the EU and I'm focusing on openness and user data ownership. iPhone app WIP.
