Economist Jim Stanford has some thoughts on high gas & oil prices, here in Canada. It's not due to the war. It's due to profiteering by the oil industry.

Podcast:
"Sandy and Nora talk politics: Canada supports bombing Iran; feels bad about it"

They, like a lot of us, find things bewildering.

How can Canadian voters accept the Liberal Party's support of Trump & Netanyahu's illegal war on Iran? Further, how can Canadians accept Carney's vision for Canada? (That vision being to turn us into a militaristic petrostate that functions as an appendage of the US military)

"The Paikin Podcast: Everything Political: Carney’s Backpedal on Iran, WWIII, and the Middle Power Doctrine"

So, I do like to listen to the right wing perspective on stuff sometimes. Good to be informed of what the other side is saying. And Paikin's podcast is super right wing. Basically, they feel the United Nations is stupid and that Iran is very close to having "weapons of mass destruction" (nuclear weapons) which justifies Carney's support of Trump's war.

C-237, An Act to amend the Fisheries Act. Bill by a CPC member. Opposed by Libs, Bloc, & NDP. Curiously, I think E. May voted Yay (I'll have to check that later though, since it seems odd). Anyway, bill fails to move on. #cdnpoli #canpoli

@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca For. PET had support for public / coop housing; Unemployment Insurance which gave workers far more options; more progressive tax policy; created and had better enforcement of the Canada Health Act; a foreign policy that moved away from the US, even acknowledging Cuba (PET wasn't perfect on foreign policy -- his stance against apartheid in South Africa was not as strong as it should have been), maintaining and even creating some public options (stuff like CN/Via, Petro-Canada, Canada Post, Connaught Labs, Air Canada). After PET, Liberals dropped Keynesian economic policy and moved toward more neoliberal styled Friedman economic policy. So, support for public housing and coops was dropped by Chretien in 1995. Now they talk about P3s, which is just more right-wing nonsense. https://breachmedia.ca/liberals-and-tories-demolished-canadas-legacy-of-social-housing/ Unemployment Insurance used to be both an insurance program and a social security program. Then Libs&Cons moved toward the "deserving poor" ethos, and "have sidelined the social security role". https://www.policyalternatives.ca/news-research/a-step-toward-the-employment-insurance-program-canada-once-had/ Enforcement of the Canada Health Act has been dismal under both Justin's and now Carney's government. https://www.ndp.ca/news/trudeau-liberals-vote-allow-profit-health-care-system-ndp-blasts-flip-flop The current government's attitude to Cuba is appalling. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/gksvrdlZ3Qo The Department of the Environment was created in 1971. Admittedly, not much of note here for PET. High goals and little action. Echoed by Chretien & Justin: each signed accords (Kyoto, & Paris) and did little to really follow through.

Regarding Alexandre Boulerice, this article states he's going to stick with the NDP until after the leadership race. So, I guess that's good. However, it does seem like he's going to be gone afterword.

From the article (rough translation from LibreTranslate):

The question of when he intends to announce his decision, Mr. Boulerice has indicated that he will wait until the end of the race for the chiefdom of the NPD, scheduled for the end of March. "That’s the priority for me right now", he said. "Then we'll talk again."

I finally figured out how to get my old microphone to work on my old computer.

It's an old Telex microphone (see attached image I found on the InterWeb). The computer is an HP EliteBook 8440p, running Debian Linux.

After a couple of hours screwing around and installing a whack of useless programs, I discovered that the microphone was muted. So, in the volume control (pavucontrol), I simply unmuted it. And now it records.

This is good if I want to do phone banking for the NDP or join Jitsi Meet (or, well, Zoom) meetings.

Good discussion on the recent Sandy and Nora podcast about the need for more services for remote communities. Also, near the beginning, Nora mentions that she is doing interviews with most of the NDP Leadership Race candidates, which will be posted at some point.

Hopefully this is an empty rumour and Boulerice isn't considering it. Given the makeup of the riding in question, it does make sense that it would be him. But, given that he's not identified as a sovereignist in the past, possibly it's someone else. #ndp #cdnpoli https://montrealgazette.com/news/provincial_politics/quebec-solidaire-gender-rule-exception-gouin-boulerice
