A book I wish someone would write is a postmortem on the failure of home automation. It is just fascinating to me that everyone I know got some sort of smart home assistant. We all purchased at least one smart thing, be it a lightbulb or blinds or whatever. And even if each component had 99% availability, together the ecosystem with a house full of stuff ended up with something closer to 94% availability.
Like either the protocol the thing used was deprecated or the app stopped working or, most common for me, it just mysteriously stopped functioning. It would be in Apple Home but just never again did the thing. Or if it did the thing, it would be slow.
It’s just such a perfect example of the kind of weird user hostile design that seems to be the dominant design pattern now. #homeassistant
