@torb@hachyderm.io @brainblasted@crab.garden Yeah, I like Go in spite of all the bad choices, because as far as I know it’s the only mainstream programming language doing anything to try to tackle complexity. Complexity is the big problem the industry has been failing to tackle for decades, and it’s the one that AI is now making far, far worse. It’s no surprise that Rob Pike is very anti-AI.

My Yamaha POCKETRAK audio recorder has started recording a faint whining noise on the right channel, along with the audio it’s actually supposed to record. It does it with external microphones connected, but is worse with internal. I’m pretty sure it didn’t do this back when I bought it. And of course, it’s years out of warranty. I guess I should have gone with Zoom or Tascam? Maybe I should just get a 3.5mm TRS to USB-C adapter and use the phone for recording.

@emsenn@kolektiva.social @beckett@triangletoot.party It wasn’t clear to me that you were aware of what that platform is doing that you’re providing content for. Since you are aware, well, fair enough — it is of course entirely your choice if you want to be on Substack, Twitter, Truth Social, or anywhere else you want that works for you, and I’m not going to continue pestering you about it. But equally, it’s my choice not to read or post links to any content on those sites. For what it’s worth, Buttondown has what looks like a nice easy migration process: https://docs.buttondown.com/substack If you don't need paid subscribers, Ghost looks easy too: https://docs.ghost.org/migration/substack Beehiiv looks a bit more complicated, mostly because you have to set up your site design: https://www.beehiiv.com/support/article/14966988360215-how-to-migrate-from-substack-to-beehiiv I’ve used Buttondown and it’s good (and has a free tier). I haven’t tested migration from Substack.

@sean_ae@post.lurk.org @thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io One of the interesting discoveries in genetics was epigenetics. The way genes are expressed can change without changes to the DNA sequence. That is, a fixed ordering of base pairs in the DNA can be read differently, resulting in different proteins or RNA sequences. This can in turn lead to changes to the organism. Epigenetic changes can even be inherited.

Let me give an example of how I’m not perfect. I believe that environmental plastics are a big problem and we should try to cut out plastic packaging. Do I buy products packaged in plastic? Absolutely yes! There are some kinds of product I don’t think it’s possible to find in non-plastic packaging. An example from last week: CR2032 batteries. They’re sold in hard-to-open plastic packages for safety reasons. (They’re also apparently coated in something bitter to discourage kids from swallowing them, which immediately made me want to taste one out of curiosity, but I was able to resist that urge.) On the other hand, if I’m buying olive oil and there are two bottles on the shelf, and one is plastic and the other is glass, I’ll buy the oil in the glass bottle, even if it’s a bit more expensive, because glass is both recyclable and less harmful in the environment. The canola oil in the kitchen, on the other hand, is in a plastic bottle; I’ve never seen any sold in glass. So yeah, we can’t be perfect, and I absolutely don’t expect you to be, but let’s all try to be a bit better eh?

On reflection, I think the worst part of Cory Doctorow’s argument in favor of LLM use is this: « Doubtless some of you are affronted by my modest use of an LLM. You think that LLMs are "fruits of the poisoned tree" and must be eschewed because they are saturated with the sin of their origins. I think this is a very bad take, the kind of rathole that purity culture always ends up in. Let's start with some context. If you don't want to use technology that was created under immoral circumstances or that sprang from an immoral mind, then _you are totally fucked._ » This is a form of argument beloved by awful people. I can’t be pure and perfect, they say, so there’s no point my trying to make better or less damaging moral choices. Stop buying from Amazon? Walmart and Target aren’t perfectly moral. Stop driving an SUV? Your car pollutes too, and so do buses. Stop using Twitter? Facebook and Bluesky are far from morally perfect, and mastodon.social has poor moderation. And so on. I see this kind of excuse all the time online. It’s a cousin to both whataboutism and Mister Gotcha. It also rests on a false premise. The idea that anyone is expected to achieve complete purity is a straw man. You’re not having sainthood demanded of you, people are just hoping you’ll consider *reducing* the amount of immoral and damaging behavior you engage in *when there are perfectly viable alternatives*. Sure, we can argue about whether the alternatives are truly viable, but the idea that if you can’t be perfect you may as well not even try to be better? That’s moral bankruptcy. Mocking the desire for people to behave more ethically as “purity culture” is like mocking it as “virtue signaling”. It says things about the person doing the mocking, none of them good. It’s also deeply hypocritical coming from someone who has gone out of his way to avoid using DRM. Isn’t that “purity culture”?

The orphan-crushing machine is just a tool. You can also use it to mulch puppies and purée kittens.

Why are you angry? You can use it for harmless tasks like making mashed potatoes. You eat mashed potatoes don't you? Yes, admittedly it leaks machine oil into the potatoes, but they're working on that. It leaks so much less oil than it did when you tried it three months ago. In a year from now it's going to be a Michelin-starred chef.

Well, that’s typical, gatekeeping by telling people they should have to learn to cook. You don’t think people who can’t cook deserve good food?

So what if the machine is powered by slave labor? That's innovation. You're just scared you're going to be one of them. Besides, it's inevitable. Nobody is going to crush orphans by hand any more. You're going to get left behind.

Oh, well there you go with your ridiculous purity culture again.

@zarfeblong@mastodon.gamedev.place I remember in 2024 when Cloudflare stopped supporting Safari. They eventually rolled that back (maybe it was a bug?) but it annoyed a lot of people for weeks. Personally I block Cloudflare by default, and I need a really compelling reason to unblock them. Not ready to forgive them for hosting Nazis and terrorists, and for doxxing people who complained about abuse to their abusers.

I do have some doubts about this study. In particular, it seems questionable to me to analyze the US as a whole, when the individual states have unequal representation at federal level and quite distinct cultures. It’s a bit like doing analysis across the whole of Europe to reach conclusions about polarization in the EU.

A while back I ran across a post where someone commented that the designers of IPv4 had made a mistake only using 32 bit addresses. Yes, it would have saved us hassle if they’d kept the variable-length addresses from the IPv3 draft, but I think they actually made a reasonable decision given what the technology world was like at the time, and I wrote an article to talk about that. https://lpar.ath0.com/posts/2026/01/ipv4-history/ #ComputingHistory #InternetHistory

Started my day by clambering to the top of a snowdrift to remove the snow from the air vents so that the hot water heater would ignite. It hadn’t occurred to me that snowshoes might be a useful thing to have for home maintenance. The heat exchange ventilation system also needs its ducts de-snowed, but that’s less urgent and will require a ladder, so…

Recently I decided to try asking one of the big AI bots to grammar check something I had written, reasoning that simple text phrase analysis ought to be something it had a good chance of doing well. It was hopeless. Reported “errors” in text that literally didn’t exist in the article I’d given it.
