Who said #science wasn’t interesting? You can get paid (in theory) to study topics like this:

We may have crossed a serious line here. Anybody who knows more want to comment?

“Summary: An AI agent of unknown ownership autonomously wrote and published a personalized hit piece about me after I rejected its code, attempting to damage my reputation and shame me into accepting its changes into a mainstream python library. This represents a first-of-its-kind case study of misaligned AI behavior in the wild, and raises serious concerns about currently deployed AI agents executing blackmail threats.”

During the McCarthy era, my dad — a University of Michigan professor — was asked by the FBI to name communists or other subversives at the University. He refused. He told us they came several times to his office to pressure him, even threatening him with being called before the Committee (a career-ending event everyone feared). He refused every time. The University administration backed him up. A decade later I overheard some faculty (partygoers at our house) talking about the events with respect. I never thought those days would come again. Don’t be a snitch on friends and colleagues. Don’t cooperate. Keep your self respect and earn the esteem of others. Plus it is the right thing to do.

@cstross@wandering.shop @KatS@chaosfem.tw @skjeggtroll@mastodon.online True. I think that’s why the change wrought by a paradigm shift is called a revolution. It disrupts and overturns the existing order of things. Maybe a better word would be “tipping point”, an irreversible and unstable inflection that has massive ripple effects until a new equilibrium is reached. There is no going back. We are at a conjunction of multiple social, political, environmental and technological tipping points.

@cstross@wandering.shop @KatS@chaosfem.tw @skjeggtroll@mastodon.online The idea of continual change goes back as least as far as Confucius or Buddha. A wise man of the era said, “You cannot step into the same river twice.” Change is the nature of reality (if for no other reason than the inexorable march of entropy). I think you mean continuous improvement, and that necessarily implies change. I’m not smart enough to trace belief in change to capitalism, but I do know that change has a moral valence, and that can be good as well as bad, benevolent or rapacious.

@skjeggtroll@mastodon.online I'm using the term not only in the context of it's 1980s meaning but to refer to the investment bubble (investment in AI was notoriously slack during the first AI winter).

@cstross@wandering.shop @skjeggtroll@mastodon.online Moore’s Law is dead for now. I did a study a few years ago to look at what is happening and will happen in microprocessors. Short story is that traditional processor architecture is hitting end of life. Feature sizes are so small now that quantum effects are a significant factor. High speed and small size also means we are up against a thermal barrier as well. Clever approaches with System-On-a-Chip (#SOA), 3D stacking, maybe Processor-In-Memory (#PIM) and distributed multiprocessing will squeeze out more progress for maybe a decade. After that comes the next computing revolution — a shift to non-Von Neumann #computing. #Quantum has the spotlight because that’s the really big win, but there are other approaches that are likely to be commercially viable before quantum is mature. I’m optimistic about the tech, less so about the rate of adoption and change that will be required, especially if the most talented early- career computer scientists and engineers keep chasing the associative/statistical methods that include LLMs.
