looking forward to the day when you can't access the internet without uploading some official ID, but you can only *apply* for said ID over the internet.

trying to remember the circumstances of this now. it was during a time that the company was trying to make the transition from being a "medium sized" company to a "large" company and reasoning that if they wanted to be large they had to adopt large company attitudes. they got this idea that a large company had a large staff turnover and were threatening a policy whereby the 10% least productive employees would be fired every year. absolutely batshit stuff. i left shortly after that.

the ultimate goal of the project isn't actually to increase productivity at all, but rather, to remove as many humans from the system as possible. humans have opinions. humans are trouble.
in fact this attitude goes back a long way. i remember hearing from a higher-up, in all seriousness, about 15 years ago, the line that "the biggest threat to a company is its employees".

of course the difference is, a static analysis tool can make a coder more productive, but an LLM can make them redundant. apparently our lords and masters prefer the latter.

coders are now using LLMs to do the work of static analysis tools that have existed for over a decade. i find it a little unsettling how so many people are apparently unaware of their existence. imagine if they had been pushed onto users with the fervour that AI is now being pushed onto people. Google even wrote one of the earliest ones. where was the hype about the productivity benefits?
