i like not having to have a microsoft account to utilize it. you know whats really awesome? being able to decide if i want updates. or a tightly-integrated piece of shit llm. being able to modify literally every aspect of the shell. windows 3.1 was more theme-able than win11. linux works out of the box for all the old people i repurpose machines for and i dont have to think about cloud-connect bullshit. fuck, half of them dont notice its not windows until i mention it. better question is why the fuck would you use windows without being paid to?

we can barely get adoption of nsfw tagging/metadata.. that said, this is prolly somewhat already trivial by setting an os/global environment var. and just having that bubbled up to the browser/app level. theres already paths for this to be used, but again.. adoption is far more difficult than the technology required.

reddit is having a conversation is some dudes house. lots of rooms. his house. lemmy is having a conversation in a large public space where anyone could be listening in. your words are no more retractable than the sound of your voice over an open field or street corner. the fediverse is an incredibly public place, so im always curious how thats spose to gel with very privacy-conscious users.

Please tell me you're self hosting that on a broken down 2012 laptop, using a $99 GoDaddy domain for the ultimate fuck you asthetic. well, no. i wanted to build something scalable and something a little more fashioned like reddit so i ended up using an open source project called mbin. its runnin ~40$/m for the resources required on a rental outta helsinki. i like to keep it open to the public as a fediverse onramp.. not a lot of local content, but pulls in quite a bit of shit. i think my compressed database backups are ~7GB. image store is ~500GB/3.25m unique. after 3 years, some instance stats:

poopin or not, theres really no getting around eating correctly and a ton of exercise for some people. id recommend finding a very active hobby you wouldnt see as exercise. i like to roller skate

i have this idea that communities should be created due to some actual pressure... as a solution to a group needing a home away from some general purpose stream... like when star trek memes took over the main memes channels and thus, required that signal be extracted into its own community... you cant just build a community and hope the content creators will come.. they must already need a home.
