Silicon Valley Rallies Behind Anthropic in A.I. Clash With Trump

cross-posted from: lemmy.ml/post/43810526

Actions by the president and the Pentagon appeared to drive a wedge between Washington and the tech industry, whose leaders and workers spoke out for the start-up.

Feb. 27, 2026

archive.ph/hwHbe

Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI, said in a memo to employees this week that “we have long believed that A.I. should not be used for mass surveillance or autonomous lethal weapons.”

More than 100 employees at Google signed a petition calling on the tech giant to “refuse to comply” with the Pentagon on some uses of artificial intelligence in military operations.

And employees at Amazon, Google and Microsoft urged their leaders in a separate open letter on Thursday to “hold the line” against the Pentagon.

Silicon Valley has rallied behind the A.I. start-up Anthropic, which has been embroiled in a dispute with President Trump and the Pentagon over how its technology may be used for military purposes. Dario Amodei, Anthropic’s chief executive, has said he does not want the company’s A.I. to be used to surveil Americans or in autonomous weapons, saying this could “undermine, rather than defend, democratic values.”

can I dump the contents of a Peertube playlist to a text file?

I have quite a few public playlists on 2 channels that I maintain. I am migrating the channels to a new instance. Unfortunately, I can’t migrate the videos themselves because of the overall size, so I will need to re-import them on the new instance without the playlists connected to them. But if I had at least a text file for each playlist, I could re-build them much faster.

How Jared Kushner's Gaza plan would erase Palestinian culture

Published date: 23 January 2026 18:12 GMT

A harrowing cartoon by Peter de Wit depicts parents sunbathing on an idyllic beach in Gaza, while their toddler blissfully digs up skulls in the sand.

De Wit’s “Gaza Beach 2030” won the award for best political cartoon in the Netherlands last year.

Now, a plan unveiled by US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law might just bring such a dystopian image to reality.

Jared Kushner, who serves as a US special envoy, announced plans for a “New Gaza” - complete with shiny skyscrapers, coastal tourist attractions and entire districts dedicated to business and commerce.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Kushner told global leaders that the Palestinian enclave would be run under “free market economy principles”.

He said these would seek to mirror the “same mindset and same approach” as Trump’s America.

Israel Is Turning the Yellow Line Splitting Gaza into a Physical Barrier

Jan 23, 2026

The Israeli military is turning the yellow line that demarcates the more than half of the Gaza Strip it occupies and controls into a physical border. Analysis of satellite imagery by Forensic Architecture shows that the Israeli military has begun constructing earth berms—large, raised mounds of earth—in areas along the yellow line to create a physical separation between the Palestinian population forced to live in the western half of the enclave, and Israeli forces who occupy the eastern half.

Israeli troops withdrew to the yellow line after the so-called ceasefire agreement went into effect on October 10. Since then, they have engaged in a combination of construction of military infrastructure and roads in the over 53% of the territory that it controls—alongside the systematic destruction of existing buildings.

Like a Military Occupation’: Clashes Rise With Federal Agents in Minneapolis

cross-posted from: lemmy.ml/post/41659680 Arrests and aggressive tactics by ICE and the Border Patrol, many seen on viral videos, have intensified the frustration and fear among residents. archive.ph/AGBf7 Jan. 13, 2026 Updated 5:23 p.m. ET The video shows a young employee in a reflective vest being hauled away by federal agents from the entrance of a Target store in a Minneapolis suburb. “I’m a U.S. citizen!” the worker shouted as the armed agents shoved him into an S.U.V. on Monday, after he had directed expletives at one. “U.S. citizen! U.S. citizen!” “It feels like our community is under siege by our own federal government,” said State Representative Michael Howard, a Democrat whose district includes Richfield, where the Target employee and another colleague were seized on Monday. Mr. Howard said both workers were U.S. citizens and were later released. The Department of Homeland Security said the Target worker seen in the video was arrested in connection with “assaulting, resisting or impeding federal officers.” It was unclear on Tuesday if the employee was charged.

The Resistance Libs Were Right

cross-posted from: lemmy.ml/post/41659941 Opinion - Michelle Goldberg Jan. 12, 2026 archive.ph/VEcWE It’s striking how much the arguments that Trump is not a fascist have suffered in just the first few days of this year, in which we’ve plunged to new depths of national madness. Both ICE’s occupation of Minneapolis and Trump’s threatened seizure of Greenland are part of the same story: An increasingly unpopular regime is rapidly radicalizing and testing how far it can go down the road toward autocracy. If people had predicted back in 2024 precisely what Trump’s return to the White House was going to look like, I suspect they’d have been accused of suffering from Trump derangement syndrome. But the shrillest of Resistance libs have always understood Trump better than those who make a show of their dispassion. As the heterodox writer Leighton Woodhouse put it on X, “The hysterical pussy hats were right.”

Anti-ICE Protests Spread Nationwide - In Photos

cross-posted from: lemmy.ml/post/41691640 Jan. 10, 2026 archive.ph/T1DlL Mounting outrage over an ICE agent’s killing of a woman in Minneapolis spilled into streets across the country on Saturday, as crowds of protesters mobilized against what they called the excesses of the Trump administration’s mass deportation campaign. The “Ice Out for Good” campaign held demonstrations in small towns and major cities, including some that have been central targets of President Trump’s immigration crackdown. The protests came three days after an ICE agent in Minneapolis shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, a U.S. citizen at the wheel of a car, during an encounter in South Minneapolis.

Protests Erupt Against ICE Killing in Minnesota - State and Local Officials, Community Demand “ICE Out!”

cross-posted from: lemmy.ml/post/41619403 January 12, 2026 U.S. vice president J.D. Vance jumped in to blame Minnesota governor Tim Walz and the “radical left” for the killing, stating the shooter has immunity. He claimed Good was part of a “broader left-wing network” that uses “domestic terror techniques” to target federal agents. Tensions are escalating and outrage is growing as working people in the Twin Cities have been the target of the largest anti-immigrant operation to date, involving approximately 2,000 federal agents, with more reportedly on the way. Meanwhile, multiple videos shared by witnesses show federal agents using pepper spray and tear gas, forcibly grabbing protesters, and attempting to prevent people from recording arrests.

Thanks, sounds like a good idea. I created a single PNG with the announcement and then tried to convert that to a webm using 3 various suggestions I found online, all involving ffmpeg. All failed. Any suggestions?

How do I notify followers/subscribers to a PeerTube channel?

I created a video channel on a PeerTube server, but its service quality is poor, so I have migrated everything to another server. The first server’ channel is still open, but I have a migration notice on the channel’s home page. The problem is that I have 8 followers on the old server whom I would like to notify directly. How can I do that using my PeerTube handle? I tried to follow my PeerTube account from my Mastodon account, but it shows “Pending” in Mastodon. When I go to my PeerTube account, I don’t see any place for messages, requests, etc. Any documention or suggestions for me to look at? Thanks.
