I think my narration is pretty middle-of-the-road, in terms of formality. The dialog can be a bit more informal--I use slang but generally I don't go as far as writing dialect markers like "gonna," or god forbid trying to write accents. I think the relevant model is the prose of The Crying of Lot 49, rather than Inherent Vice.

#writersCoffeeClub 2/19: What's your biggest challenge when crafting a satisfying ending?
I always want things to be okay. A lot of the time, I have to go through and take out every time the characters say "are you okay" to each other, because it is too much. So I come up with my solution to whatever the problem is, and that happens, and we're done! And then I have to go back and add tension, and make sure it goes on for long enough that it feels like it satisfies the rest of the novel.
