And from what he's told me second-hand, at least around here, there's definitely at least 1 in 10 schools which would consider paying slightly more, if only they provided the same level of service that Google does.

Not every country is like the US where teachers get paid in peanuts and students are running on nothing but corporate sponsored pizza.
All Apple needs to do is snag like 5-10% of the market and they'll have a solid foothold.

@VD15@pl.valkyrie.world Sometimes you don't even need to go that far. If you visit a site like https://www.helsenorge.no/ (our portal for public healthcare) you'll notice that every single web request contains a header named "X-Azure-Ref" so you can find the web request in Azure.
And yes, this means all of my healthcare info is probably stolen by Microsoft whether I like it or not, cool right?

@VD15@pl.valkyrie.world You wouldn't believe how ingrained Microsoft is here in Norway. From what I've heard we're among the worst, to the point we don't even seem to have track of how much money we give Microsoft in total.
The best estimate I've found is here: https://www.stortinget.no/no/Saker-og-publikasjoner/Sporsmal/Skriftlige-sporsmal-og-svar/Skriftlig-sporsmal/?qnid=105081
Which states it's around 21 billion NOK for IaaS/PaaS and SaaS. In USD that would be ~$2.1 billion. For a country with only 5.5 million inhabitants.
Or put another way, Norway gives $400/year to Microsoft per citizen. Simply by existing in this country, I am giving Microsoft $400/year outside of my control, thanks to the government.

Swift isn't necessarily a bad language, but it is a corporate-developed language biased mostly towards one platform. Seems like a dumb choice for a browser that one would expect to try and maintain portability and be cross-platform.

if i'm lucky the Wh is listed in the specs, but it's not uncommon that i have to google a power bank and find it on the manufacturer's website instead. sometimes it's not even on the manufacturer's site and i have to scroll through the PDF manual or something
for example here's two power banks:
a white one that advertises 20 000 mAh (actually 37Wh)
and a black one that advertises 27 000 (actually 100Wh)
Shopping for power banks is such a pain in the bum, because the numbers I need to make an informed decision usually aren't available.

The cheap stuff all seems to only do regular 5V. And even for the ones which do seem to have enough pins, I've got no idea how they avoid momentarily shorting pins that probably shouldn't be shorted, like sending 20V down a data line for a moment when you unplug it.

I have seen USB-C cables which are magnetic along their length so they coil themselves up though (and I own one).
Maybe I should get one of those cables with a magnetic plug on it and stick it into the 2.0 port on the Neo, it's not useful for much besides charging anyways

Some computers like the 2019 MacBook Pro can only charge via USB-PD at up to 100W, but pull more than 100W when actively in use, even the base model. Meaning that even with a 100W charger connected the battery will drain.
So that's really cool, it can still run out of energy while plugged into the wall.

Current reply
It's especially annoying for something like the Macbook Neo, because not only are the savings not passed on, it's the opposite.
It sells for $599 in the US. But here in Norway it costs 7790kr (~$805) it should be around 7290kr (~$750) including VAT if the base price was equivalent. All while the device ships WITH a 20W power adapter in the US, but WITHOUT it in Europe.
So not only am I not getting a power adapter included with the thing, I'm paying $50 extra for the privilege to not receive said power adapter. Amazing, Apple really has done it again (And I'm a smuck for giving them moolah)

@kkarhan@infosec.space I don't think the Neo's value is that bad considering the metal build and seemingly good screen (at least on paper),
There's definitely some apple tax on there, but not a whole lot. Especially considering the current market.
I've ordered one so I'll have to see it when I get it, but I assume it'd work very well for most people. The only issue being RAM, even a regular user is going to flow way over 8GB and constantly rely on swap/compression if they're not the type who cleans out their browser tabs regularly.
And yes, I know the 512GB Studio is gone. (Honestly don't mind because it seems to mostly have been built to make cheap alternatives to DGX clusters anyhow after they added RDMA). I don't spend much time worrying about the ultra-high end stuff like that.

Since the Macbook Neo is limited to 8GB due to how the A18 Pro is designed (Memory stacked onto die on chip). I wonder if that means a second gen Macbook Neo based on the A19 Pro would have 12GB of RAM as that's what all current products with that SoC use.
If they manage to bump the memory to 12GB with the next generation without increasing the price, the Neo's value proposition would suddenly become a LOT better

@bard@asphodel.rip It doesn't charge. If the "good" battery is at 100% and I connect a charger, the charging LED turns on for like 30 seconds, before it seemingly gives up on charging the bad battery. I think the T480 tries to charge its batteries sequentially.
Unfortunately I don't own a general battery charger, so I can't really take it out and try to trickle charge it manually either.

Well I guess that's also possible. It currently seems to be parked unattended though. Do they usually leave them long-term facing the supply ramp? That seems a bit unusual.
Having a roof over it isn't "important", otherwise it couldn't even drive. But at least here I mostly see them unload, then go park somewhere else (preferably with a roof). At least the ones with heat pumps ontop, the ones without one they just park wherever.
