Today's hopeful thing:

- K2 wrote their name in the sand.

(They are doing so many things requiring fine motor skills this week - and not because we make them but because they want to! These things are very hard for them, but they try.)

@eightfiftythree when the "accomodations" part started and my esteemed colleague went, "this student wants to negotiate these accommodations," I immediately said "just for the record, they don't want to negotiate, they request we accomodate their needs, as is their right".

Maybe I'll just follow up with "and that's not to give them an advantage," the next time.

It's so tiring. Yes, this is work. But we need those students and they can do great work!

Examinations committee. At some point I'll need to make a "disability accomodations aim to level the playing field, they are not a favor or an advantage" and just tap it.

Wisdom from a colleague: "[name] always rolls his eyes when I say these words, 'solidarity', 'feminism'. And then I tell him, '[name], that's just what we call it when we have each other's backs and people of all genders have the same opportunities', and he can't say anything against that"

- seeing that @Fuchskind's "Kekse statt Nazis" ("Cookies instead of Nazis") was at protests in four different cities. Maybe there were even more!

If the only thing these protests do is bring us together, it's still a lot.

@irina the almost-sacrifice of Isaac makes me super uncomfortable too. It's just unimaginable as a parent.

That's one way of experiencing God: in a power fantasy. Moses himself survived a similar massacre; now God uses Their power to free slaves and lead them to freedom. While taking care no animal dies needlessly by advising families to pool resources. It's drastic, but it also shows Their priorities.

Jesus also survives a similar massacre. And in the end, his story shows a different way of experiencing God.

As a human who washes his friends' feet, feeds the hungry, heals the sick. Who brings a different freedom in a different way, by self-sacrifice, but has similar priorities.

We read both stories together because both (and countless other) ways of experiencing God are valid and real and needed.

Religion, Christianity Sensitive
So. The passage, which the acquaintance found only archaic and disturbing (slaughtering animals! Painting frames with blood! Massacring the firstborn!), feels very relevant on multiple levels! First, of course, because it's the origin of Pesach, which Jesus and his friends were celebrating: being freed and led away from slavery.

But there are other things in there as well. Egypt's firstborn are killed and the Israelites get out of their captivity.

One thing the recent sexism discussion made clear to me: many people, when asked whether they witnessed sexism, talk about isolated sexist *remarks* they witnessed or didn't witness: catcalling, fuckability scoring, demeaning commentary about body weight.

But sexism is *structural*, and witnessing sexism also means witnessing mansplaining, almost exclusively male engineering classes or upper management ranks, gendered clothing and toys for toddlers, parenting advice for "moms", and much more.

This* article by @adapalmer is really neat and illustrates something I've thought for a while: the reading protocols for SFF and history are quite similar!

My favorite quote: "A struggling space colony may be saved by rugged space marines, dutiful hereditary lords, the teamwork of the crew, or one special little boy; each option makes a claim about where human power lies, while having the space colony perish despite all efforts makes a claim about human powerlessness."

@amalia12 yes, I've ruled out surgery too. It's just not the right time for something needing recovery now. I'm fine with wearing a binder.

(And given my family's history with breast cancer... who knows 🫤)

HRT is more interesting but also very scary. I've gone through hormonal changes (and soon there'll be another) and it's not easy!

@amalia12 somehow it makes me both want to physically transition more and less. If one only knew what hormones do to your body beforehand.

I finally watched this* clip which has been going around, a beautiful duet with a past self. It's lovely.

But man does it give me complicated gender expression feelings. I can't really express them yet but they're definitely there.

Today's hopeful thing:

- strangers being helpful in little ways, just making each other's lives easier: making a grumpy baby laugh, pointing out the correct bus stop, putting on a respirator.

Yet the traditions stay; in fact, like most traditions, they became burdened with more expectations after they'd lost most of their religious meaning.

They no longer fit society's needs well. Or maybe they do, the time is just not right. Maybe January would be a better time. Or August, that's a quiet month in many countries!

If holidays don't fit needs anymore, they usually change, and it'll be interesting to see how that goes.

Christmas Sensitive
A perfect time for fasting and resting and having a celebration with many lights, then, Christmas in mid-winter.

It's different now, of course. Most people don't work in agriculture any more, and artificial lighting and heating mean that most work doesn't have to cease. In many professions, December is, on the contrary, one of the busiest months.

A quiet month of fasting makes no sense now. A festival of lights might still, but doesn't feel that urgent anymore.

Let December stay hectic and celebrate the quiet time Between The Years more? Let Christmas become a niche religious thing, maybe like Corpus Christi? Christmas month with decorations like scary month leading up to Halloween in October? Something else entirely? Have a date in August as Going Home And Fixing Computers Day but Christmas parties in December?

I do hope we'll find good ways, ways that suit our modern needs.

When people started to celebrate Christmas in December, that was a quiet time.

Most people worked in agriculture, and the agricultural year was over by then: all crops brought in, all fields prepared, trees cut, livestock that couldn't be brought through the winter slaughtered.

People relied on daylight for many crafts, and the days were short, which meant a time of rest for them too. No construction work, no military campaigns, very little travel.
