Free speech for whom, Zuck? Freedom of expression requires freedom from oppression. Removing protections risks silencing the most vulnerable, whereas careful moderation can be empowering. This move prioritizes freedom of people who are already powerful.

Our team at the Citizens and Tech Lab at Cornell have written about some of our initial findings in a project exploring people's privacy and content moderation experiences on E2EE apps here!

Check out the preprint for a paper that will be published at #CSCW2025! “Whose Knowledge is Valued?: Epistemic Injustice in CSCW Applications” by Leah Ajmani, Jasmine Foriest, @jordant@hci.social, Kyle Pittman, me, and @michaelann@hci.social. I’m really proud of this one, even though I only had a small hand in it.

I'm excited to be speaking at All Things In Moderation, happening May 15-17. The event is based in Australia, but talks and panels will be recorded so North Americans who want to participate don't have to worry about missing middle of the night sessions!

And the best thing is that a portion of the proceeds are being donated to the Kenyan Content Moderators' Union

As someone who was part of the migration, I really enjoyed reading these preliminary results from a survey on migration from Twitter to Mastodon by @cfiesler@hci.social, @bkeegan@hci.social and @MattNicholson@hci.social. I also appreciated the inclusion of thoughtful articles on why migration is harder for some groups than others, which may not surface through survey methodologies.
