Welcome to th 6th #ShelterChallenge wednesday update:

This time I write about a spontaneous informative shelter building performance at the Transition Town seedmarket and about free to lend cargobikes in Bielefeld...

I am contacting possible cooperation partners and present my masters project "Common Shelter" at local events. I reached one milestone: I successfully completed all necessary seminars at HSBI to start my last semester: From may 2026 I want to have a public shelter construction site as part of my masters project and i want to build real shelters. At the "Transition Town" Bielefeld seedmarket on march the 1st I started small:

I build a shelter model from recycled wood sticks (as shown on the image) and later put it on my info table. There was also a big Infosheet, flyers and a small 3D printed shelter model my lecturer Prof. Edith Kollath gave me as a gift. I had good talks with visitors and people working at the seedmarket that was organized by "Transition Town" Bielefeld.

"Transition Town" is a multicountry initiative for climatefriendly energy and local transformation. In Bielefeld it initiated repair cafés, community gardens and free cargobikes. At their infotable i found an interesting postcard about "Fleet Bielefeld" (in german "Flotte"):

"Free cargo and transportbikes in Bielefeld. Cargobikes, parallel tandem, riksha – the Flotte Bielefeld counts 17 bikes and one folding bike. They are free to use (donation appreciated) – use not own. The Flotte Bielefeld is a network of different cargobike projects and together working for the transformation of traffic." (my translation)

One of my artistic ideas for the shelter construction site is that we together search resources for building and possibly use the free cargobikes to get them... e.g. gifted stones for the shelter legs and old pallets for the sleeping area.

Welcome to the 4th #ShelterChallenge wednesday update...

Yesterday I had a good talk with some members of the discgolf-chapter of TuS Ost #Bielefeld. We had a walk together and discussed some potential shelter places on site. A cooperation for a public art construction site starting in may 2026 to build two shelters seems possible.

Because of a deadline on the 15th february I proposed the art construction site to the Bielefeld Democracy Fund. With the slogan "Together into the future" it spends money on projects that are for example empowering people. A subgroup of the city council decides until april 2026 which projects receive money (up to 3000 euro each).

The shelter construction project aims to empower people and to allow participation: While building shelters together and later when they are used. There are people in germany who say they won't have the possibility to have one week of holiday trip a year. In january i had friendly email contact (in english) with the danish ministry for the environment "Naturstyrelsen". They have example construction plans for shelters on their website. They told me that in recent times mostly modell 7.1 small and 7.2 middle are build.

I read in another source that after a donation of about 2.6 million euro from a foundation about 400 new standard-shelters are being build in denmark in the last years. Herzlich Willkommen zum vierten #ShelterChallenge-MittwochMittags-Update...

Gestern hatte ich ein erfreuliches Gespräch mit einigen Menschen von der Discgolf-Abteilung des TuS Ost in #Bielefeld. Gemeinsam haben wir potentielle Shelter-Standorte zu Fuß besichtigt und besprochen. Eine Kooperation für den Bau von zwei Shelter-Hütten mit einer öffentlichen, künstlerischen Shelter-Baustelle ab Mai 2026 erscheint möglich, aber es ist noch einiges zu klären.

Vorsorglich habe ich rechtzeitig zur Abgabefrist am 15.02.2026 für die angestrebte Kunst-Baustelle einen Antrag an den Demokratie-Fördertopf der Stadt Bielefeld gestellt. Unter dem Jahresmotto "Zusammen in die Zukunft" werden unter anderem Projekte gefördert, die sich für mehr Teilhabe einsetzen. Ein Gremium des Stadtrates entscheidet bis April 2026, welche Vorhaben bis zu 3000 Euro Förderung pro Antrag erhalten.

Teilhabe und Selbstwirksamkeitserfahrung stehen sowohl beim geplanten, künstlerischen Shelter-Bau, als auch bei späterer Nutzung im Fokus. Es gibt Menschen in Deutschland, die sich nicht in der Lage sehen, eine Woche im Jahr Urlaub zu machen. Schon im Januar hatte ich (auf englisch) freundlichen Mailkontakt mit dem dänischen Umweltministerium bzw. der Naturbehörde "Naturstyrelsen". Sie bietet auf ihren Webseiten eine Beispielsammlung mit "Open Source"-Bauplänen an, unter anderem für verschiedene Shelter. Sie schrieben mir, dass aktuell in Dänemark besonders kleine und mittlere Shelter mit den Modellnummern 7.1 und 7.2 gebaut werden.

In einer anderen Quelle las ich, dass nach einer Spende von ca. 2,6 Millionen Euro von einer Stiftung in den letzten Jahren 400 neue Standard-Shelter in Dänemark beauftragt wurden. Welcome to the third Shelter! Update from Bielefeld. I was ill a few days and needed some rest, so this post is one day delayed and short:

On tuesday I was at the Martin Niemöller comprehensive school and had an interview with two teachers of the bike projekt. A plus for free: I saw the active schoollive from a teachers room perspective.

On their journey to France the MNGE cycling group would have liked a dry shelter hut very much, when they stayed on a french bivouac place, "a wet meadow". Another location for a shelter place in Bielefeld popped up and we discussed ideas for a construction site talk.

A really good idea of the school is that they offer some free bikes to lend to pupils for the annual long distance bike tours. Even pupils who have no own bike are empowered to take part.

Like the other interviews I will work on it and present it at least in july at the "Werkschau" at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Bielefeld.

I also sent a call for support to a contact in the local environment department, because i need to start real talks about real places for my shelter art construction site soon.

If you have something that could work as a "private workaround" for a new shelter place... on a farm or your business place outside of town. Do not hesitate to make me an offer!

Herzlich willkommen zum dritten Shelter-Update aus Bielefeld. Ich war einige Tage sehr erkältet und musste etwas kürzer treten, deshalb auch ein kurzes Update, diesmal am Donnerstag:

Am Dienstag habe ich in der Martin-Niemöller-Gesamtschule das Interview mit dem Projekt FahrRad nachgeholt. Gratis dazu gab es spannende Einblicke in den wuseligen Schulalltag, mal aus der Perspektive des Lehrer*innen-Zimmer.

Die MNGE-Fahrrad-Reisegruppe auf einem französischen Biwak-Platz ("Nasse Wiese mit Plumpsklo") hätte sich wohl sehr über eine trockene Shelter-Hütte gefreut. Ein neuer Ort für Abklärung einer Shelter-Option wurde im Gespräch genannt und Ideen für ein gemeinsames Baustellengespräch diskutiert.

Eine sehr gute Idee der MNGE ist, dass sie auch Reiseräder an Schüler*innen für die Teilnahme an der jährlichen Fernradreise verleihen. Sogar Schüler*innen, die kein eigenes Rad haben, können so die Welt der Radreisen entdecken.

Wie die anderen Interviews werde ich es spätestens zur Werkschau im Juli 2026 als Podcast aufbereiten und präsentieren.

Ansonsten habe ich eine konkrete Unterstützungsanfrage zur Abklärung von Optionen für einen Trekkingplatz in Bielefeld an einen Kontakt beim Umweltamt Bielefeld gesendet.

Ich denke auch über "private Workarounds" für meine Shelter-Kunst-Baustelle nach, also falls es nicht auf öffentlichem Land klappt so schnell... Bietet mir gerne auch eine Ecke am Rand vom Bauernhof an, oder auf eurem Firmengelände außerhalb der Stadt.
