Watching #TheMission (1986) in light of the current AI crisis in #HigherEducation.
The other day I happened to re-watch this 1986 #film by #RolandJoffé. I had last seen it 40 years ago when it came out. It has aged quite well. The depiction of the indigeneous #Guaraní people is embarrassingly superficial. And the idea that the Jesuit order was a benevolent force is of course laughable. But as a story of an institution that willingly sacrifices its purpose and moral integrity in a power game, the film works.
I can't help drawing parallels to the current AI corruption of higher education.
In Cardinal Altamirano (played by the excellent #RayMcAnally), we see the manager who knows that his action destroys the very rationale of his institution, yet he does it. The two priests (Jeremy Irons and Robert de Niro) are the ground-level staff who stay true to their calling and fight, in different ways. They vanish. Years later, the manager has the luxury of regret.

What can one do about someone like Lestrade, Watson, he said to me once we sat in the cab. Someone who can't think can't see the truth even when it stares them in the face. Jones would never have twisted the compression coupling counter-clockwise, he's a trained plumber, for Heaven's sake! It was Lord Jenkins who removed the pipe, ignorant of the nature of the fittings. Hence the scratch marks on the brass. Lestrade will call on us again by evening. It is Tuesday, Watson, I believe Mrs Hudson has some cake for us. We can keep some for Lestrade.

Our Lady #JoanMastodon had fought entire battles defending hashtags against the Great Algo, and her alliance with John Mastodon had been strained ever since, in the Great Debate, she had referred to his tags as #slushtags.
So #hashtags clearly mattered to her. But she used them in a highly idiosyncratic manner. The link between tag and toot was oblique at best, often impossible to discern. In a toot giving her favourite mutton stew recipe, for instance, her hashtags did not include #mutton or #stew or #cooking. Instead, she simply added a single tag, #ThankyouTeam, nothing else. We knew her style and we loved her, and we could spend days speculating about a particularly mystifying tag.
Sir Alfred once pressed her to explain why she used hashtags in this way. Her reply was given by-the-by.
I'm a free girl aren't I, Alfie. My hashtags are free, too. Let each hashtag find its way. My tags don't need me to direct them. Why don't you have some more of my mutton stew, Alfie.

Higher Education's march toward our eventual genAI suicide continues.
N is an enthusiastic young colleague who's been promoting genAI all along. This week he shares a new paper he's written. In it we find a lengthy list of the dangers of genAI and why we shouldn't be using it. Wait, what? Is this the same guy?
Let's read on. What is N's solution to the recognised genAI failure? "Agentic AI." Ah, that's where we're heading!
A long list of agentic AI's presumed powers follows, along with presumed supporting pedagogical theory. No reference to actual practice: like Sam Altman we trade on future promises.
The soulless, person-less future we are promised, without any hint of irony: "AI as a collaborative partner"; "from AI as a servant to AI as a learning companion".
Heaven help us.

Young Jeremy was new to Lady Joan Mastodon's circle. His writing was extensive and varied, often quite clumsy, and the other knights had made gentle fun of some of his toots. He was hurt.
This evening we sat together at our Lady Joan's table, enjoying her mutton stew. She had cooked it herself, saying "you will only ruin it" to anyone who offered help.
Young Jeremy addressed our Lady Joan across the table: my Lady Joan, do advise me, what is the biggest mistake one can make when posting? I want to post well.
Lady Joan's answer was quick. Trying to be cool. Don't try to be cool, my friend. Everything else follows from that.
The knights had many questions, asking for clarifications. But our Lady merely repeated that everything else would follow naturally.
When young Jeremy left the table later that evening, our Lady called him back and gave him a Tiffin Box with her stew. For your lunch tomorrow, Jeremy. Store it in the fridge and re-heat it gently.

Congratulations, raising my virtual glass in your direction! I do so across continents, and across time as well ..., since my own reading of the book was many decades ago, as a young student. I have re-read selected parts from individual volumes, but never found the right mental frame to do the full second round. Perhaps this year!
It will be strange: revisiting the text and experiencing its circular nature, and at the same time facing the "having passed" of much of my own lifetime. Bits that the young Roamer read as an advance notice, the current Roamer may recognise from his own life, or he'll realise he misunderstood them all those years ago, or he may think them wrong. (Master Marcel won't mind.) I will give it a go this year.

Professor Agatha "Agy" Nimble, the Pro Vice-Chancellor Education. She enters the room lightfooted, a winning smile on her face. She is the never-say-no Anglican Bishop, caring, soft-voiced, immovable.
Professor Nimble does not teach anymore. But she runs her own workshops on how to transform your teaching.
She absolutely loves every comment, idea, criticism made by a participant. She prepared a slide before the session, listing all the interesting things that participants have said and learnt during the day.
She is the author of the University's "Teaching The Magical Way" strategy and heads the curriculum transfomation process. She may or may not believe in it herself, but she knows that she would find it easy to implement, if only she could clone herself sufficuently many times to place herself in each of our roles. Her workshop has shown us how to do it. She is very empathetic and she forgives us that we don't see the way yet.
She will not change the plan.

A new biography of Gordon Brown, by James Macintyre, reviewed by Jonathan Freedland.
I always had a lot of sympathy for Gordon Brown. His politics was far from perfect and the New Labour project started trends that did not end well. But, hell, what Labour did in government after 1997 was an incredible achievement, and Brown as Chancellor made it happen. The man also has personal integtity. On all of these fronts, the current Labour crop fail abysmally.
A sympatheric review of a sympathetic biography. I probably won't buy the book, but I recommend reading the review.
And I raise my virtual class to a politician of integrity and stature.

Sir Geoffrey had placed his map on the table in the Great Hall. He explained it to our Lady Joan Mastodon. Every tag had its place. There were arrows between them, colour coded. Shaded areas identified groups of related concepts. Sir Geoffrey had even added little drawings to some of them: a camel for tags relating to periods of scarce resources, a harp for festive events, a skull for search engines. He beamed with pride.
What wonderful work, my friend, our Lady Joan said to him. And I love those droll little drawings, they are so evocative! But I fear you overthink your hashtags, my dear Geoffrey.
She turned around to address her knights. Hashtags, my friends, are meant to surprise and disorient. They break up what appears frozen, they connect what is isolated. Use them without plan. Hashtags are life.

I read all of it as a young man. It meant a lot to me. Later I routinely picked up one volume or another and read a few sections. Each time that was a naturally enjoyable reading experience, meeting the mood of the moment. Not a forced exercise to prove something to myself.
One day I hope to re-read the entire series, one more time.
The Recherche creates a world and a society and a way of responding to others and to ourselves, at once unique and historically specific and universal.
The obvious danger is to treat it as too big a thing and then never do it. Looking at your question, I'd say yes, absolutely, read "a little Proust".
I'd just give the first volume a try, a cheap paperback stuffed into your coat pocket, read it on the train or in a sandwhich bar at lunchtime, a few pages at a time. If you don't like it, no big deal. If you do like it, finish Vol I. And if you _really_ like it, hell, you can even move on to Vol II!
