👋 Hi, I’m @thesaigoneer@social.linux.pizza , our man in Saigon.
🌱 No-coder +, perpetually between DE and WM

📫 Adjusted a gazillion of dots and still drinks beer. Since I've tried them all I've landed on KDE, dwm and a slew of other window managers. Quintessential distro-hopper, but running Slackware for over 3 years now. And counting. No issues with FreeBSD, Gentoo or Arch either. Prefer bare bones rolling. Into atomics and init systems also.

👋 Don't blame yourself, learn feng shui & blame the furniture

Remember I did that bootc KDE container, based on the Bluefin template? That method is really handing the power to the user. I've now tried Origami (Cosmic), today a brief stint with Zirconium (Niri and Dank) and I'm now heading into Zena. That last one looks to be very special, and is also a bootc container. More later.

I need to delve into rsync. Just noticed a well maintained repo of KDE pkgs, running on the oldest distro around. I know the maintainer, finally a chance to get back into the groove 😎

Since I use Cosmic almost exclusively in tiling mode a proper wm or kwin is the better choice for me.

Currently exploring Origami Linux. Bootc, Fedora Atomic, Cosmic, Cachy LTO kernel. Included tooling is all Rust based, even my friend Yazi is there. Very nice! Shoutout to @distrotube@fosstodon.org for pointing me to this distro. #origami #cosmic #archlabs

All this tech fluff has me two albums by the Black Keys and one by the Black Crowes to catch up with. I need to reset my priorities. As I should have done the last 60 years or so.

@peterkotrcka@mastodon.bsd.cafe Reason why I give it a go. As far as i see now it is too bloated for me. Two kernels, 4 or 5 texteditors if you take the default, snapshots etc.

One of the nice things with Garuda Mokka is you get some ricing, applications, tools etc. ootb. But all can be adjusted, turned off or even deinstalled quite easily. Everything has been added as separate packages, not meta packages. Which means I can deinstall KDE Connect separately, without any complaints about Plasma Meta being broken. That's great 👍🏻. #GarudaLinux

@superuserdo Oh, and when you want to be one of the really cool kids follow this: https://it-notes.dragas.net/2025/12/22/void-linux-zfs-hibernation-guide/ by @stefano@mastodon.bsd.cafe (yes, yes, the bsd.cafe barista) and setup zfs et al, according to this great tutorial. And don't shortcut with the script ☺️, do it manually, step by step, it is a great learning experience. Used that on my work laptop for two months. Either way, enjoy the Thinkpad!

@superuserdo VoidLinux is a great distro. It requires some reading (mainly bcs it uses runit), but it is all pretty well documented. I can recommend this vid (by a Vietnamese guy 😅), that helped me a lot last time: https://youtu.be/iYszYEMoivY?si=X0mtgQRtF9Fn6wFv And search for jake@linux on YT, he has a ton of good videos on VoidLinux! Void is very snappy, that T480 will love it!

After a month on my NixOS KDE it was time to change gears. Heading back to Arch and spins for KDE. Cachy is impressive, but brings a lot. Too much for me. Right now Garuda Linux, with the KDE minimal iso, looks to be the 'winner'. This is very close to pure Arch, and only adds useful tools like btrfs snapshots. That one for the next month.

An underwhelming experience, my first setup of T2SDE. Technically absolutely something very special and blazingly fast and snappy. But at the moment too many usability gaps (installer, upgrading, documentation) to use it (even in beta) as a daily driver. At least for me. A pity.

👋 Hi, I’m @ thesaigoneer , our man in Saigon. 🌱 No-coder +, perpetually between DE and WM 📫 Adjusted a gazillion of dots and still drinks beer.

Because I don't know what I'm doing for the last 60 years or so, I patched something into dwm that pastes the clipboard into whatever I'm doing when using the scrollwheel. Given that i use the scroller quite a lot it's effing annoying 😡

@01micko@aus.social I'll keep that shell around as long as I like it (and it still works). But from my current slstatus tweaks: that's all I need. And I have no intention building anything myself (outside of slack, gentoo, dwm and crux that is) 😆 btw, @dobbie003@fosstodon.org has been bar-less (in dwm) for years now. he couldn't care less 🥳 @jloc0@mastodon.sdf.org

@jloc0@mastodon.sdf.org Yes, I'll start out with your Niri et al. I am curious anyway about it on a laptop (gestures etc), I've already got some nice configs and then focus more on Crux itself. Coming from Slackware and Gentoo there's a lot of similarities, so that makes it somewhat familiar already. With Void I'm having some update niggles, the hothead I am has already downloaded the latest Alpine iso 🤣

Without naming names: I don't like RSA key issues with mirrors, so two consecutive kernel updates aren't working out properly. Changing mirrors doesn't help either. It was what drove me away 3 years ago; the update to KDE 6 took 3 or 4 days, breaking the whole shebang. Coloring outside the lines sometimes invokes a black and white response by me.

@jloc0@mastodon.sdf.org Thanks! No exciting stuff to be expected here, as with Gentoo I'm just gonna follow the handbook. Don't really need that many specific drivers or kernel modules here, I'm going for a X11 session anyway. For me it's about Crux, not (yet) what's running on top of it. Just thought about qtile, old fav of mine that I haven't used in a while. Let's go!

Cool thing of NixOS. You need a package temporarily (i.c. wget), run 'nix-shell -p wget" and after some brief magic you can use it in that session. So that Crux iso came down very smoothly.
