@thousandleaves@universeodon.com
mastodon 4.5.6

Lives near #DesMoines #Iowa #USA

Former #Cloud #AWS developer, but sometimes I dabble.

Now I mostly do #Woodworking, preferring #HandTools except for the tedious bits.

Two kids, both currently out of the house so it's just my spouse and the dog, who gets all the attention

@shapr@recurse.social I used to use a git repo. It was fine, except I would inevitably forget to pull or push changes and then have to deal with conflicts or wonder why I can’t find that thing I wrote yesterday. I’m currently using #Syncthing (https://syncthing.net/) to keep files on each device in sync with my local file server. Working great so far.

My daily driver for nearly 10 years, this MacBook Pro from 2015 has a swollen battery. This repair was much easier. Only four components to remove before getting to the battery, which went straight to the hazardous waste drop-off. Again, thanks to @iFixit@mastodon.social for parts and an excellent guide. Who knows, maybe I’ll get another ten years out of it. #ifixit #diy #righttorepair #macbookpro

The patient is a 13-year old MacBook Pro undergoing a radical battery and keyboard transplant. Fingers crossed that it survives the operation.

@pluralistic@mamot.fr You don't even have to wait to sell your stock! "Tax-Loss Harvesting" allows you to save up that loss for sometime in the future. Then you turn around and buy the stock you just sold. It's basically a free tax deduction!

@isotopp@infosec.exchange @cstross@wandering.shop The parts that you mention _are_ the parts that should be modular and repairable, especially on a laptop: The i/o connectors, they keyboard, the display, the lid hinge, and most importantly the battery. Those are the things that break. Those are the things I need to be able to repair or replace. I currently have TWO MBPs that need replacement batteries, and it's such a gnarly job that they may not survive the attempt. If I can't replace them, I'm buying a Framework and never looking back.

Last summer I made this cutting board out of some walnut scraps laying around. It was great until it split badly. I threw it back in the shop, thinking I’d cut out and rebuild the split area. The shop stays at 64F in the winter. In the last few months the split has closed and disappeared completely. I can’t find it no matter how closely I inspect it (it didn’t split along any glue line). So I guess I’ll keep using it until it splits again? #woodworking #cooking
