Trezzer (aka Helvedeshunden)

@trezzer@social.linux.pizza
mastodon 4.5.7

Been using computers since they were 8 bits. Generally like those and 16 bits better than what we use today. Have too many games and too little time. Playing around a bit with Linux these days - both on Pi and as desktop and on Steam Deck. Always used and loved the "wrong" platforms, so you'll see me talking fondly about things like Amiga and Dreamcast with zero shame.
I try to keep politics to a minimum and just have fun on here - but no promises! No QT.
Also: Currently learning Japanese.

Pretty bonkers experience tonight. I have Fedora on its own drive next to Windows on my desktop. I've mostly kept it around because I have pre-paid game pass for a few more months. But... I've been spending most of my time in Fedora - including playing my games. Today I rebooted to try a preview of something where Proton doesn't work yet, and ... my PowerA Advantage *wired* Xbox controller won't work. It's half-way invisible to the OS. Spent hours trying troubleshooting tips and running diagnostics and so on and so on. You know where it works every time, though? In Linux. (All I did was allow Windows to install the latest security updates and the latest Arc drivers - so that's the only change) Troubleshooting in Windows is an incredible mess, too. Menus linking to menus or websites and tools saying they are deprecated with seemingly no replacement. I know I often call out Apple for poor quality control and UI design, but Microsoft is so far behind, they aren't even playing the same game. I guess I should just Clonezilla my Fedora on top of Windows and get it over with once and for all, shouldn't I?

I wanted to change the background on an iPhone to match a new cover, and for the life of me I can’t figure out how to pick one of the built-in options without having to set up all widgets all over again. Apple explicitly hints that I should hold down on the locked screen, but that only seems to let me access everything BUT the background.

Whenever I've had a need to use my Android-plaything-phone for a while, I am always struck by just how much nicer it is to use Niagara Launcher than iOS or any of the regular launchers on Android. If I could replace the iOS home screen with Niagara, I would do it in a heartbeat. It is so much nicer to use that it's frankly ridiculous. Another thing I find rather superior on Android is text manipulation. The hold-space-for-cursor on iOS is good, but everything else is better on Android. That includes the typing experience.

@benroyce@mastodon.social That's true, and the paper is problematic, for sure. Considering the current time and context, though, it is easy to assume it was written at this point in time which would put it in a slightly different light. Not a better one, but a different one.

I try to keep politics to a minimum and just have fun on here - but no promises! No QT. Also: Currently learning Japanese.

Why aren’t all keyboards black / orange/red / grey or shades of blue? Seems a waste of desks.

@nina_kali_nina@tech.lgbt It's funny, though, once you have tried a few distros, setting up new ones and noticing the little things that are different almost feels like a game. "Oh, a little puzzle to solve". First-time users just want their sh*t to work, though, understandably :)

This game demo was mildly triggering but also pretty funny. It's basically a Windows 9x desktop invaded by pop-ups and old icons chasing your mouse around Vampire Survivors-style. https://store.steampowered.com/app/4320630/Antivirus_Survivors_2003_Professional_Demo/ #SteamNextFest

@Genstart@mstdn.dk Friendica lider lidt under UIet. #Danskertrut

@SuneAuken@mastodon.world Helt sikkert.

@andycarolan@social.lol Agreed. They don’t even want to move to a 1:1 replacement like Stoat because they are in more than one “server”.

@andycarolan@social.lol They are for two very different things. That’s what made Discord great and awful at the same time. It’s nice that forums have long memories and IRC have close to none. If someone wanted to do a community site, you could totally do both, though; forums for serious discussions and a web-hosted IRC with zero barrier to entry on the homepage. The real challenge is moving people away from the big hubs of closed-off darkness. IRCv3 seems like it may even offer a lot of what people are used to from Discord and Slack, but I’ve yet to do more than peruse the feature list.

I haven't really used my Sonos gear that much, but finding the Study Hard station may well change that. All instrumental. No easy listening bullshit. Currently listening to Pelican - Ephemeral.

Absurdly enough, it seems like what Yahoo! Search used to be is more relevant than every before. A human-curated index of sites. You couldn’t find everything, but what you found usually had some worth.

When a customer leaves, #Backblaze asks to hear from said customer in their goodbye-mail. If the customer takes the time to write a reason, they get a mail suggesting they sign up for their ticket system followed by an answer by an AI. Then, the customer becomes angry.
